I am starting to shop for a gun safe. I don’t have a crazy big arsenal but it would be nice to lock some stuff up. What features, brands, etc should I look for? I’d like to stay under $700-1000 if possible so I am very open to used gun safes.
I’d get the biggest one you have space for and can afford. Much like a shed or garage, they are never big enough.
Another thing I’d try and get is a mechanical lock. I have both and the electronic lock eats batteries, I know it shouldn’t but it does. I have to plug in a 9v battery when I want in and unplug it when I close the door or it’ll eat it in a couple days. Its not an uncommon problem with them
And lastly, if you can, get a fire rated one (you never know). They cost more, but you’ll be locking up a lot of “stuff” besides guns and ammo.
If you can’t/don’t get a fire rated one an option is to get a smaller fire rated box for your important papers and keepsakes and keep it in the safe.
best of luck
edited to add these options…
this is a good one for the $$$$
Its got a key backup too, big plus

Liberty Safe is top notch and what I have. I’m sure you’ll end up getting different opinion’s - Are you Ford or Chevy? - but check out what will fit your need. Plenty of options out there. I recommend something that is “solid state”, higher fire rating and the size of what you require. Hope that helps.
Hey Rap, I would go with Liberty all the way. Those EF mentioned would be my first choice with what you wanna spend.
I have a Fatboy, not the junior and it has 120volt pigtail out back of it with outlet inside that I put one of the warming bars in there to control humidity. Only like 12 watts.
I also have the electric touchpad to unlock and battery lasts over a year. If EF’s dies in two days it sounds like a short of some type.
Just a thought…
As a follow-up just because it says holds 30, it doesn’t mean it’s true. Rifles with scopes will eat up that space in a hurry and putting a gun sock over them helps with scratches.
Sometimes less is more. Yes, get one bigger than you think you need. But don’t be fooled by all the extra interior type organizationing things. I don’t use most of the little containers that came with mine. Midway sells handgun holders that velcro to the interior door. You can get creative and fit alot of stuff on the doors like that.
I do see them on FB occasionally. You can get a good deal if patient. I have an appliance dolly you can borrow if need be. Any decent safe is heavy heavy.
They all have different fire ratings and most people have an opinion on what is the minimum. Buy what’s in your price range. Any safe is better than no safe. And I prefer mechanical over digital too.
I keep thinking of other stuff, but I wouldn’t own a gun safe without adding a goldenrod.
It’s the best way to keep humidity out, it works by staying just warm enough to keep the interior of the safe a touch warmer than the outside ambient temperature, thus never allowing moisture nor condensation into the safe.
This is important, really.
