Appeared to me, DF was giving you sound advice.

Does Carolina skiff make claims to be “unsinkable”? I thought that was a Boston whaler thing. I know theres foam floatation in the floor but I suspect it would still sink if you swamped it.

Flip it over and find out. Well inshore of course.

Why would they bother to put foam in a boat if it would still sink ?

Well folks it’s been a lively discussion. With the hypotheticals and all. If I were to sum it up, it sadly ends with my set up being a no-go for the jetties. So I will see you all at the jetties one day this summer in my tan j12’ CS powered by a whopping 9.9 horses! Please be kind to me and throw me some pogies or fat mullet as I cannot throw a cast net.

That’s what they say.

Very capable creek and decent river boat depending distance you want to cover, tide and proximity to the inlet and rough water.
Have you ever heard of any 12ft skiffs having problems at the jetties? Me neither, your golden, go for it. Its sounds like you may not have the confidence to do it, luckily for you they sell it by the bottle at the ABC stores. You will also need bow rails according to most.

40 ,did you know you were listed as one of the “straight shooters “that wouldn’t lead anyone astray ,by GW in the surf fishing section?

The Jetties are full of surprises.
-the tide pulls thru there at a speed of knots at full ebb/flood.
-can your 9 hp handle that?
-tide/wind conditions create wave situations there often described as a “washing machine”
-conditions there can change quickly, squalls move thru-lightening etc.
-crossing the harbor on your way home can be dangerous in a small boat like yours
-I fished the Jetties many, many times when I owned an offshore capable 22’ CC.
-have experienced wakes 8’ high at the Jetties that made me wonder if I would get swamped in that craft!
-do not pay any attention to the “pick your days” advice often given here. Conditions can deteriorate quickly-even on a “nice” day.
-is your boat fast and powerful enough to get you out of harm’s way quickly? Bet it isn’t:).
-I have been boating/sailing in all sorts of boats and conditions for over 50 years-you asked for experience
-I would not go anywhere near the Jetties in a 12’ Carolina Skiff powered by a 9.9horse.

What he said.

I’ve been at the jetties in my Henry O 17, a high quality design and build that is intended for those kinds of waters, and been glad to have had as much boat as I did.

No way I’d do a CS 14 with a 9.9.

That is a perfect boat for some chores. (Get a fly rod and start chasing reds in the high tide flats.) But, it is not a big water hull.

Well, Charles, if you insist on going to the Jetties, as indicated
in a previous post, in spite of all the excellent advice written here against doing so from
highly competent and experienced Captains, I can only wish you
all the luck in the World.
-make sure you have plenty of extra gas on board
-buy high quality life vests-do not use the cheap orange versions sold at Walmart
-as Palmer Scott wrote, you do not have a “big water” hull.
-at the Jetties, you are in The Atlantic Ocean and subject to all its vagaries.
May you always have “Fair winds and following seas” on your trips there!

Nah guys I really don’t think I’ll end up at the jetties unless it freezes over one winter and I can ice fish it. I don’t ever bring my fly rod down when I come but some YouTube videos I’ve seen recently have been changing my tune on that. The skills I lack in the castnet throwing department I make up tenfold and the some when it comes to chuckin flies. I just hate the thought of having rust build up on my Hatch reels, the other reels aren’t equipped with the internal drag system and won’t last long in the salt environment. Do the reds stay schooled up in the summer? All of the videos I see of people fly fishing for them, the reds are schooled up and folks are in shorts and t shirts. I thought the reds kind of dispered after spring.

Charles, it’s been a good run! On the cast net thing… Dad had me stand on the picnic table and throw it over and over and over … and over. I’m still not super good and still throw a taco from time to time! While doing the picnic table thing I didn’t have wind and a rolling boat, but I can still do ok from time to time. I like a 6’ but can throw an 8’. 12’ is out of the question for me.

On the Reds/spot tail… they are here and can be caught all year round.

Good luck out there dude!!!

Thanks. I practice quite a bit on grass but when it comes to doing it infront of people at the docks I fail miserably. I did find the most bomb spot for mud minnows using a trap on JI so I guess I’ve got that going for me. Are eels any good for bait? I threw those nasty looking things back in the creek.

We were at the jetties Saturday morning in a 19’ Scout and it was slick except when the cargo ships and cruisers came by throwing up the 3-4 foot wakes. We ran across the harbor at 35 mph going out but had to come back at about 8 mph because of the white caps from the wind that blew after noon. We got soaked.
I sure am glad that I wasn’t in a 12’ boat with a 9.9, Conditions change so quickly that you should not put yourself in danger in a undersized boat with a motor that should only be used in the creeks.
Listen to all the great advice that has been given to you from so many different people.

also Kebda was great. yall are haters

John boats, small skiffs and jetties. Sounds like a horror movie to this Coastie. I’ve seen them out there, but can’t say it doesn’t make me nervous for them!

I’d like to use my lifeline and ask Kebda for his professional opinion on the matter.

You troll pretty good but you’re no kebda. Study up on 40"redfish and toppyblue. They’re masters
