When: The weekend of June 1st, 2008
Where: Beaufort and Port Royal South Carolina

The Cobia are in the river, and the local unincorporated group of lunatic kayak fishermen, will be gathering for our Third Annual BARF Cobia and Shark Rodeo on the Broad River.

In addition to this, the Local Kayak Shop, Higher Ground of the Lowcountry, is having Demos that weekend at Hunting Island State Park (South Beach) and another location in Beaufort.

They did this without knowing of this weekend being scheduled for the BARF Cobia and Shark Fest on the Broad River.

That being said, they have asked if the Kayak Fishing Community would be interested in visiting the demos, and possibly answering some kayak fishing questions at the same time.

I will get more information in the next few days.

P.S. X_Fishn/P4R? What are the tides that weekend?

Those who can’t fish, spend too much on seafood!

Are we going to launch from Parris Island again??? That was a good time last year, I WILL get a Cobia this time!!!

DD

Go Buckeyes!!! No, Seriously, GO!!!

Mornin’;
Yea, D.D., hoping to launch again from PI.

00:21 +0.4 L
06:25 +7.1 H
12:36 -0.5 L

The Kayak and Surf Demo will be Sunday, June 1st from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. at the Lagoon and South Beach.

If any of you could come out and stay to answer fishing questions, it would be appreciated. I know most of you would want to return home prior to this, but any assistance would be appreciated.

As for fishing Saturday, the 30th. We will have an incoming tide from 0600 until noon… We could fish the first two of the incoming, take a break on shore and eat a lunch and tell fish lies…stories, then fish the last two of the incoming and first two of the outgoing.

Be off the water around 2 P.M., plenty of time to get back to Hunting Island and fish the last two of the outgoing tide in the Lagoon from roughly 4 P.M. to 6 P.M. with the guys from Georgia Kayak Fishing, if you feel so inclined.

P4R, the first leg sounds great… More info on what you are talking about though, please? Perhaps we could get some token prizes… or a pot prize.

Sorry in advance for the stupid question…I was raised in the SC school system so you’ll have to go r-e-a-l s-l-o-w for me…

How do you fish for Cobia? Troll, drift, anchor??? Sorry, never tageted Cobia but I assume if it’s like shark fishing you are anchored or drfiting over holes. Also, do I need to have a depth finder if that is the case, or do people share hole locations?

Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks for your patience.

Yo mud, I might be able to get down there for a day over memorial day weekend. I’ll let you know. What day are you thinking about?

Troy and Mark, As for the next weekend, with the tides looking like outgoing in the morning, would it be better to put in at the bridge and then drift down towards the rip? What do you think??

DD

Go Buckeyes!!! No, Seriously, GO!!!

Mud, DD I will be on a trip 5/15-19 but was thinking about heading out the next weekend.

Sounds like a plan to me… Just remember to head out a ways when getting close to PI… Wouldn’t want anyone to get lead poisoning from the 'cruits!

Troy, Mark, can y’all fish next weekend? Sounds like DD and I can make it make it so far…? Maybe others? If not, were can we put in(without being turned away) to some of the deep water that’s needed for those boys?

Mud,

Heck yeah, come on down. Hopefully the wind won’t be howling.

If it is, we could always hit the surf… My friend and I caught Three nice Seatrout (22", 20" and 18"), several large ladyfish (20-24"), a small blue fish and lost 6 other seatrout (All keepers) in the suds trying to beach them, at Hunting Island, all on artificials.

We found the secret pattern and delivery…

Final plans…

Friday Night, we will be meeting at Cabin 15, Hunting Island for Frogmore and socializing.

Saturday morning, we will be caravaning from Saint Helena Elementary School at 0600 to the Gray’s Hill Landing.

Gray’s Hill Landing is at the end of Clarendon Road. From Charleston, turn right at the light (Shell Gas Station and KFC on the right), and drive approximately 1/2 mile, and turn left (Still Clarendon Road), and continue until you hit the water, thn back up and park!

From Beaufort, turn left at the light after the Air Station, and follow the above.

Accountability?

Saturday I noticed it got pretty sporty when the tide changed is everyone all present and/or accounted for?

Any brownies?

come on guys, fess up… i want to hear some stories.
i was in bahamas last week and didn’t even wet a line. (waste of money in my opinion), much rather been with ya’ll.

Final score…

Brownies 15 - Yakfishermen 0

Sharks 2 - Yakfishermen Over 30!

Stingrays 14 - Yakfishermen 1 :stuck_out_tongue:

Dolphin Dave caught the most, around a dozen Sharks and a 50+ lb Stingray, and showed off by standing up in his yak in the middle of the Broad River with 15 knot winds and 1-2’ chop! Of course he always have FIVE rods in the water, so I don’t feel so bad finishing runner up with 6 sharks, the largest a 40" Atlantic Sharpnose, with a SINGLE rod.

I did have something break 40lb test at the knot with the swivel to the braid… Never saw what it was, but it quickly ran off about 5oyards of line and after turning it, I fought it for another 5 minutes before it broke free… Took my nice $12.00 Jig with it… Yep, was attaching an eel to a jig and actively jigging the whole time… I lost several more of what I suspect were sharks, to discover only have a elel on my jig.

Overall, it was a nice day, and far too few Chareston Yakkers were there to join us.
