Never said reel was solely for sc. Can use 150$ setups for majority of what is in our water and call it a day honestly. Also when get Stellas for half retail value it is a little more irresistible.
There is just no way I would spend the money on a stella ever. My buddy has one and that thing is just a fancy hood ornament.
Those cabos are great I have a few of cabos and boca in that size on some penn jigging rods. I just got a smoke 50PTsA and it is bad a$$.
My main questions is:
How do you fight a 60lb fish for 40mins with 40lbs of drag? Who was handling the boat? I have caught some big fish on those reels including some big cobia and once I tighten to 40lb or more that fight is over. Those reels max at 55lbs of drag. I run 80lb braid with 100lb flouro leader on them though so maybe thats the difference.

I’m with you. I’d never spend $1,000 on a spinning reel, but the Cabos at about $200 are the best I’ve ever used in that price range.

Well if got a stella for 500$ you might see where I am coming from haha. Yes paying over 1k$ is silly I will agree with that. I may not be able to read manual and box/writing may be foreign but the price was good.
52 inches of line per crank is what made me fall in love with the stella… also being able to put a spinning reel in the spread trolling…

Okay first off, there was no 40 pounds a drag on that fish, as Gary only had either 40 or 50 pound test on the reel, The hook was also too small for the job at hand, so the fish was able to take line At ease. I kept waiting for the hook to bend out or that 40 or 50 pound leader to snap. He should’ve grabbed one of the rods with 80 or 100 pound braid in a 9 /0 Circle hook. You ask who is driving the boat, I was! And I had to drive in circles from Almost an hour while the fish did whatever it wanted to do. That Rod was more rated for b- liners or a 15 pound redfish not a 60 pound cobia. It was a miracle that we landed that fish.? Now you know the rest of the story!

That makes the fish story 10x better than anyone just horsing it in on heavy tackle, combine that with reel apparently coming off rod at one point haha.
I will buy that cabo 80 whenever you are convinced by enough shimano guys that it’s no good. Should be pretty cheap sale price by then! Let me know.

I won a fancy Vanstaal spinning reel on a west coast long range trip a while back. I couldn’t use it because the handle was on the wrong side (left). Are all Vanstall spinning reels non reversible?
Thanks for the chat about spinning reels. They’ve come a long way in the last few years. Back in the day, you’d get laughed off the boat with a coffee grinder.
Looks like I’m gonna have to get a couple of these Quantum Cabo’s.

Quantum, Zebco and Van Staal are all the same company now. The Van Staal VM series are very similar to the Quantum Cabo. You see a lot of Quantum in the VM series, and there are some things from Van Staal you see in the new Quantums that save weight.
Nothing beats the design and toughness of a Van Staal VS or VSB series though. I have had the USA made and the China made ones, and I cannot tell a difference. Have never had to go inside a Van Staal yet…
I have never seen a left hand model VSB or new X series, but you could get a VS in a left hand from what I understand.

Thanks for the come back Phin. I’ll check in to the VS model.
Zebco? That’s a new one. I thought those were the toys for kids.
