Really Cool Dolphin Experience

So Friday I took off and we fished the jetties, which we did crappy, but that’s not the topic.
As we were cruising back we started seeing dolphin all around us by fort sumpter, so we stopped to check it out. I’ve been running these waters since i was 15 and have never seen so many in one spot in my life. they were all around the boat and just everywhere. some were feeding i think, but there were multiple sets of them kinda rubbing all over each other. i assume mating? I don’t really know, but it was the craziest thing i’ve seen in quite a while. We just sat there for 30 minutes while they were just popping up all around us. we threw all the leftover squid in the water hoping they would eat it, but they didn’t seem interested.

i remember a review paper on inshore bottlenose behavior, and IIRC they have two peak feeding periods every day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. they’re so good at taking care of their metabolic requirements that most days they have lots of other time for the other two “F’s”

we refer to that part of the harbor as the washing machine, and along with just inside lighthouse inlet it’s one of the most consistent places in SC to find them hanging out. I sometimes play nonsensical musical tunes by banging on the hull of the boat in the hopes that they’ll recognize me and the kids

They are really cool creatures. I watched a couple slide sideways up on to a mudflat to chase mullet to eat at Bulls Bay one day.
