I’m not using it in any boat that I repair or build. That crap is like a soft sponge. USCG approved closed cell foam is the only foam going in my boats.

DF brought his boat down on Friday. It was a pleasure meeting Doug I’ve got his hole repaired already, just need to clean it up and make it pretty now. Needs a little sanding, a little tinting and painting. Should be finished by tomorrow afternoon or Monday.

It was a real pleasure meeting you Larry. Man, looks great! You guys should see the boats Larry builds. I am talking a true craftsman. He is an artist working with wood and fiberglass. He is building one now that I hope he will post pics of when he is done because it is awesome looking right now and I can’t wait to see the finished product.
Thanks Larry, I can’t wait to see it!

Thanks Doug. I didn’t fill it the way I initially thought I would. I had figured on backing it with foam, but the void under the hole was so small that I used epoxy thickened with wood flour and milled glass fibers instead. Beveled out the hole and covered it with 6 progressively larger over lapping layers of glass cloth.
Weird hole, weird problem. The hole was obviously drilled in the sole for some reason during manufacture and never got filled with anything besides a layer of glass and gel coat. The core is 3/8 plywood and perfectly dry and sound. Hard to figure why it had a 1" hole drilled in it like that. I’ve checked the entire deck and can’t find another soft spot like it. Anyhow, there ain’t no hole no more

Do you think maybe they drilled several holes in the deck and used them to “shoot” foam in between the hull and floor? That does sound strange.
The repair looks good.
Well, I really suck at color matching. Structural repairs no problem, color matching, I’m better off painting the whole boat:smiley: Made 2 different batches of tinted epoxy this morning, both of them were too white. Made 2 more that were too cream, made 2 more that were too gray. Finally got it almost perfect, along with my rendition of splatter paint matching, and a thunderstorm snuck up on me and screwed that up.
Got it figured out now though. The goal of a good repair is that it has to be structurally sound and nearly, preferably completely, invisible. Matching 10 year old gel coat and splatter paint is a much harder challenge than fixing the hole. I’ll get it in the end, I’m a stubborn SOB and I don’t quit until I’m happy with the results. Not happy yet. Tomorrow is another day

Dang Larry that part of the deck will look better than the whole rest of the boat. Please don’t worry about it being perfect, I may end up Kiwi-gripping the deck like we talked about. I’ll just add to my ever growing “want to do” list.
That looks really great.

I got DF finished up this morning and he picked it up this afternoon. Again a pleasure to meet Doug and his family.

Sorry, but nothing leaves here that isn’t as perfect as I can make it and I’m completely satisfied with it. No matter how many times I have to do it again. My boat is named No Excuse for a reason, there ain’t no excuse for poor work. I sanded off everything I did yesterday and started over, one more time, with more experience.
Now I’m happy with it
If you didn’t know exactly where it was you’d never notice it. Once it gets a little wear and weather it will be invisible.

As Larry said, unless I showed you where it was, you would never notice the repair job. Thanks so much Larry, you are a true craftsman and a fine man. Since you refused payment, I will find a way to “pay it forward”.
It was a pleasure meeting your wife. It appears that like me, you lucked out in that department.
Thanks again Larry!
