Almost spooled a...

Shevlin,

They are incredible sight at that size. I have seen the free jump in Tampa Bay. It never ceases to amaze me.

Salty,

Thanks! I think we all needed that!

Heck, I consider myself an experienced fisherman and I’ve been spooled many times. Got spooled and popped 3 times in one week in the Keys last summer. BZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzz…bing  I love it :smiley:Once was a 100+ tarpon on 12 lb, once a sailfish on 12 lb, don’t know what the other was. Only know what those were because they jumped.

Why do the biggest fish always hit the lightest rod:question: Got 4 big live baits out on big tackle and a tarpon eats the little silverside minnow you are fishing for yellowtails with. BZZZZZZZZZzzzzz…bing

Larry we were Cobia fishing at the Ross last may and I was using a Stradic 3000 with a dropper loop rig to catch BSB while we waited. Dropped it down with tiny pieces of cut bait BAM ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ… All of us on the boat just laughed and watched the line peel off. Luckily is broke the mono at the swivel and I got all my power pro back! Good times!

I was in awe of their size so much that I somehow didn’t notice the 3 of them were swimming right into our spread. Line popped out of the rigger and he took off and everybody in the cockpit was yelling fish on, big fish etc.

I was in the tower and the only one that saw the ray…had to yell at my friends 3 times before they finally realized I was not kidding and they finally locked the drag up. FWIW the ray went straight down like a tuna.

A person posted a while back about accidentally hooking a bottle nose, and he said it was the fasted 3 seconds of his life. I ve been de-spooled forgot to set the drag on my penn spinning reel, PLOP the drag knob and spool to the bottom. I did get the spool back. Lesson learned. [:I]

Please tell me how that happens when trolling at 8 kts in 1000ft of water MAX!

1000ft of water? Oh, you think that fish run straight to the bottom when hooked... That's real cute...

Also, what makes you think that 1000ft of water is the “MAX” around Charleston waters? It’s not uncommon at all for people to fish in 1500-1600+ range. It probably happens every weekend during peak…

If the fish is getting close to spolling the reel get another heavier rig ready and tie it’s line to the base of the reel being spooled. A few turns before you run out of line, dump the whole rig overboard and keep a drag setting on the new rig that will prevent you from losing the overboard rig. Eventually the fish will tire from dragging the whole business around and you can retrieve the rod and reel and the fish. This is done all the time on the west coast. I’ve done it on 240 pound tuna

Urban legend... I can't believe that anyone chasing 240lb tunas wouldn't invest in some braid for their $2000 R&R, nor would I believe someone would throw something like that overboard.

Sorry, but I call fish tale…

Irish Wake,

Several people who’ve commented on this topic are highly experienced offshore fishermen, and even they admit to the occasional spooling. My questions are:

  1. What’s the point of your post?

  2. Do you have any positive solution(s) to this “epidemic” or lack of skill?

Most people who post on this site do so to seek or provide wisdom and assistance. What’s your objective? Think about it, and let us know…

“I’m not a hundred percent in love with your tone right now…”

I think that he just wanted to show off his fishing and math skills and say that 1000ft of water is the "MAX" that anyone fishes in Charleston and that it's impossible to get spooled because everyone knows that pelagics run straight to the bottom for the nearest stump once they get hooked...
