it really helps if your reef anchor has an eye on the tine end too…connect the shackle to that eye, then run the chain up the shaft and zip tie to the eye at the opposite end…in a perfect world your setup would be plenty, but if for some reason it still gets stuck you can power the boat, breaking the zip ties at the top (opposite the tines) end and then pull it up from the eye on the tine end…make sense?
and I will caution against one more thing…be careful with your chain…too much motion with it and it can get snagged on the wreck itself…THIS can be dam near impossible to unhook…

Bonzo72, Your right about both…there will BE NO CHAIN ON THE REEF ANCHOR…it’s just the picture Amazon had for the anchor (chain NOT included). Again…the zip tie thing??? I don’t know how to judge the zip tie thing with a 9000lb boat??? If the wind carries my boat just a tad…I will need more zip ties than say a boat that weighs 3000lbs…right??? So, I don’t know how I can judge this without spending half my day playing around with zip ties…I only get a few days a month to do this Charleston thing and it aint gonna be throwing an anchor down 50 times trying to figure out zipties…lol.

those tines are made to bend…they are aluminum
Schoolsout1…Yes, you are correct. That’s why I bought it…I don’t want to chance my PLOW anchor getting hung…I am done worrying about it. Now a 5/8" 3 strand rope will yank that aluminum anchor right off the bottom, out of the rocks and off any railing this anchor might be hung on…then just simply reset the tines…DONE.

For general bottom fishing 300-400 feet has always been enough for me, with chain roughly equaling boat length, as others said. If that ain’t enough I’ll just drift fish or troll.

Trial and error mostly. If they break unintentionally they weren’t heavy enough. If you can’t break them when needed, they are too heavy. Carry plenty of spares.
If you rig your anchor like this you can (almost) always get it out, even from wrecks and rocks.

Cracker larry…thanks for pic, I guess if you have enough slope like at least 5 to 1 the zip ties aren’t under that much stress???. Yes, I can rig my plow like that…when I have time to play around I will…I don’t want to chance either the ZIP TIES will hold or will not…lol…So, because I just invested in the aluminum reef anchor set up…I think I will use the plow as my emergency “god forbid” anchor…because she does grab good.

Put a chain on the reef anchor! The times will bend out. do not use the reef anchor on an artificial reef or you will lose it.

And Half inch ,triple strand nylon would’ve been sufficient. Five eights braided line is overkill and produces much more drag

Not a fan of the reef anchor but - to fold the tines back do yas use a length of pipe?
Make up 6 pieces of garden hose a few inches long to cap off the tines & sleeve the outside of the pipe with thin wall hose to minimize locker damage. Even with Sea Decking on the bottom things roll to the sides and make a mess. May also want to keep a square of rubber matting to lay it on while ‘adjusting’.
I expect Jim to be seeking the easiest method for posting pictures of his full cooler of fish. My instructions don’t always work for me.

That’s a fact, the line itself creates a lot of drag, requiring more anchor and chain weight.

You selling any of the extra line?

Down here is where a signature goes but they can confuse and anger some people so I don’t have one.
I use a rubber laundry basket to tote my reef anchor…and I drilled out some wine corks (not the real cork, but that fake chit) to put on the tines to protect against bumps and knocks…yea, it will do a number on fiberglass…
and yes, a 2’ piece of 2" diameter PVC pipe will help bend the aluminumiunumunium tines back into place…

For what ya’ll paying for rode, chain, and anchor you can buy an I pilot and 2 batterys and be done with it!
