Artificial lures ?

I do use fluorocarbon for a leader. I will look into how to tie a loop knot and try that as well. I will also stock up on the different jig heads. Thanks again for the help.

red is what i use the most and orange works good too. when im casting jigs its usually with 15lb green or cajun mono on a 7 foot medium action graphite spinning rod i use back home for walleye and it works fine for me and an absolute blast when i hook a 26"+ red. never heard of the loop knot trick though ill have to try it out!

I know I saw someone mention Mission jig heads Ive been getn trout on those red with opening night zman minnow. Also if you can find it ive been getn hit even more with the new koppers live target mullet twitch bait

I use is a good old lead head jig with a root beer body and chartreuse paddle tail. That is my old faithful. Works for reds, trout and flounder. Electric chicken is another hot color.

I dont want to hijack the thread, but my question is. How do you store the artifical baits? I have a friend that swears on storing them in the freezer. He says it helps them stay fresh. I usually just store mine in a cool area. What are y’alls thoughts?

Hijack away! Never Hear of that but interested hear some responses. I must store mine on the boat in my tackle bag/box.

agree w/ new penny Gulp shrimp - you don’t have to do anything special - if the fish are around they will find them! (don’t know about keeping them in the freezer… I think that might cause more trouble with the wifey than I need!)

You should definitely have a few DOA shrimp in your bag of tricks too. The clear colors (ie, clear, clear w/ yellow tail, pink tail, glitter, etc) have always worked best for me, alone or with a rattlin’ cork.

In my experience trout love a red jig head with “opening night” curly tail grub (there are a couple brands that are pretty similar) but I’ve never caught much in the way of reds on that combo.

I grew up using red/white and chartreuse H&H “Cocahoe Minnows” on the Texas coast, harder to find around here but they work great for everything!

ALWAYS store Gulp in a watertight container or you will be sorry. The juice will mess up your tackle box (or vehicle) and should be stored separately…and we all know how lovely it smells! The Plano Liqua-Bait Locker is designed specifically for this and works great. It will hold several of the Gulp Alive containers and has space for bags as well.

After years of spending all kinds of money on all the coolest hot lures, I am back to using a texas rigged plastic worm. I fish them the same way and cast at the same type features as I would if largemouth bass were the targets. Reds love them, as do trout, flounder and stripers. I use a bullet weight that gets to the bottom predictably. The only two baits I used for 2011 were “the worm”, and I like a “countdown” lure for fishing the rips that bounce off the banks. My fishing gear that used to fill a tackle box now fits into a pocket. And I hammered them.

toxic, those are two great artificials for the marsh, or anywhere. what sinking (countdown) bait do you like?

try some of the Zman Paddlerz in the 4inch. Rig with 1/8oz weighted worm hook or 3/16oz Gamakatsu jig head. I like the Redbone and Houdini colors.

I like the natural color rapala. I usually use the medium size, but I like them all. If there are stripers around, hang on.

So back to the whole leader thing… To use or not to use a leader when fishing braid. I’ve heard people arguing about this all the time. We hooked up with a guide once who said that clear leaders are pointless… Just wondering?

I have always used a flouro leader with braid, and no complaints! One good reason I like the leader, it is much easy to cut and re-tie with leader than straight braid. I could be wrong, but I feel like the leader gives me a bit of “shock absorption” at the end of the line, so baits don’t get ripped right out.

As for the guide, just read this site, lots of guides saying lots of things. Besides, it just takes a boat and a 6pack, and wallla, you are now a Fishing Guide. But who knows, he could have been right on.

I use a 20lb camo leader. It does give a little shock absorber and gives the bait a little give and also allows for easy take on and take off ability. Not sure how most of you guys do it but the last time I went I took a pair of fingernail clippers where I could get to them fast and that made a world of difference.

I disagree. There may be a point and time when a clear leader does not make much difference, but there will also be a time when it does make a difference. When the latter time comes; Ill have my leader on.

So will I. 10-20lb. fluorocarbon leader, about 3 feet of it, no matter if fishing artificials, dead bait, or live. Double uni-knot or surgeons knot to the braid. Loop knot to the hook or jig.

You’ll never know how many fish you didn’t catch, but might could have:wink:

Has anyone used one of the Zman chatterbait redfish lures? Wondering if they are really worth 5 bucks…

I Have not but A guide friend of mine in FL said if you are fishing for reds you need to have a chatter bait in the box. I did not know z man makes one but I have one i am going to try next trip. As for the cost, Five bucks is pretty cheap for a fishing lure these days. I would say to buy it!

Do you have a good reference for how to tie the loop knot. I found a lot of different types of loop knots and not sure which one is correct. Thanks for all the advice. Going to have to buy a bigger tackle box as well!
