I don’t have the experience of most of you but I’ve caught fish on “real” bait and artificial baits both. I cringe a little inside whenever I snag an artificial and leave another chunk of plastic on the bottom though. Most of the fishing techniques I’ve learned so far have me working slow over oyster beds and other structure so there’s plenty of opportunity for snags. I’ve been using Gulps mainly because I was told they’re biodegradable.
Finding the live bait is another factor though. I can usually get mud minnows easily but mullet, shrimp or menhaden are much iffier(word?) to come by. I cast for them with inconsistent results at Sunrise park on JI but I only have a kayak and don’t know where else to find them from the shore.
With all that said, catching on top-water artificials is a ton of fun! I just haven’t learned where/how to do that so well yet.
I keep seeing everyone say slower is better and I’m not doubting you guys, but I use a spinnerbait and reel it as fast i can over oyster bars and the reds tear it up. I second the Mann Waker as well it is an excellent bait and of course doa shrimp. It is the fruit of the sea and everything eats a shrimp.

“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman
