I agree with Claim about Top Spot maps. Used with Google maps they can help take a lot of guess work out of deciding where to go if you don’t have time to learn the area. Top Spot maps ARE NOT MEANT FOR NAVIGATOIN, however its been my experience that they are fairly accurate as far as water depth and giving you and idea which creeks are navigable. The current satellite pictures of the area on Google maps seem to have been taken at, or close too low tide, so used with a top spot you can get a pretty clear pic of what to expect on your route and when you reach your destination.

When planning my trips I pick a spot on my Top Spot, then find the corresponding spot on Google maps and drop a pin to mark it. Then If I am unfamiliar with the area I will drop another pin at the landing or dock then as many as necessary between those two points to highlight land marks for navigational reminders and sand bars or oyster rakes ect where I need to be extra careful. If you have a smart phone with Google maps and a Gmail account the maps you create will be available on your smart phone so you can bring them up to use on your boat, sort of like a bread crumb trail.

This technique has worked well for me and should for you as well. I am sure there are flaws in this technique but am equally sure that someone on this sight will point them out, and I look forward to any forthcoming constructive criticism.

Charleston is a beautiful area and ten times so when seen from the water.
I don’t mean to sound harsh in saying so, but if you get out on our in shore waters with only the soul purpose of catching fish you’re missing half the point. I’m sure, as I have, that you find the marsh to be a truly enchanting place. Good luck I hope you folks have wonderful time.

For sheephead try the 526 bridge, 17 Bridge, and Crosstown bridge. You can usually see the areas where people have scraped oysters. Thats a good place to start.

With that boat I would run to the jetties or nearshore reef.
Sheephead can be had in good numbers at both.

Put the boat in at Leeds Ave ramp. There is no channel up river from 526 bridge and you will run aground at low tide. The whole river turns into a big sandbar/mudbar. Dont be fooled by the large channel opening under the bridge. It’s deep right there but jumps to 2 ft on the other side at low tide.

The area that we are at apple street is that the shallow part. The owner said 4 ft low tide 8 ft high tide. I don't know where the off shore reed is or how to fish the jetties! Would you pm me and tell me this info. They said there was a private ramp beside where we r staying and a larger ramp very close 200 yards away. I do know where those bridges are! Thanks for the help! First time with no guide. Can't wait! We are going to try to go to shem creek also but hope and pray we don't get stuck anywhere. That would be awful!

Plenty of deep water above 526, you just have to stay right after you go through the bridge. There are several Sporty’s that dock well upstream. You can make it past Kings Grant in a deep V if you know the area.

I will defiantly let y’all know how it goes. Can’t wait! Although now it looks like it’s going to rain all weekend so a little bummed!

Thanks for the info! We have a sea boss 24 ft. I think specs say it only drafts 2 ft

Sherri

Second that… stay right as you’re headed upstream from 526. Big sandbar on the left just before the bend.

Thanks y’all! I can say there is not **** to be caught off this dock! Tried all the secrets everyone has told us! Can’t wait till when the boat gets here tomorrow! I can see 526 about 3 foot ball fields away to the left and a draw bridge to the right!

Sherri

We learned a lot this weekend! Loved the house we where very close to sandbar! Learned that we need to do a lot of reaearch on what to do, wear to go, and how to navigate in the ocean. I guess everyone learns somewhere. Had never imagined that the water is as shallow as it was. Would live to store out boat cheep instead of going back and forth. Lead Spring broke on trailer, but people at the marina where so nice and helped us get a new one and we fixed at the house! Finally I caught some catfish, stingray, and lots of blue crabs which we had for dinner. Thanks to each and everyone for all the help and info. Ready to come back and try this again!

Just typed my response. Not what I was expecting but fun anyway! Next time we are going to hire someone To go with us that likes to fish and have fun to show us the ropes. Scott at haddlers point was such a nice guy to deal with.

Sherri

Awesome. (Except the part about the trailer spring)
