Squid Row’s summary of catch shares is spot on. Recreational fishermen need to realize that they are next in line for catch shares just like they would have been for VMS if we had not stood united in opposition to it. I like RDW’s idea of allowing each state to manage their fisheries.
I read the apps.
Mr. Conklin is “Pro Catch-Shares”
My fear is he will screw us over while not “alienating” us.
So are we going to work together to pass on our God-given freedom to fish to the next generation or assume we will be the last Americans to enjoy God’s gift to us?
Freefish, again you are spot on. Squid Row’s appraisal definitely gives it light that america is becoming socialist. Just understand how it works. The government controls the fishing and gives us the “appearance” of saying that we control it. How wrong it is. Just like everything else, our rights are being eroded away. Only in massive poverty and lack of rights will we understand this. Unfortunately, our youth has been dissuaded into believing that it it a matter of entitlement. Entitlement it is, for the party favorites! Look at China, massive poverty, yet the illusion of prosperity. Fishing is only a small piece of it, but again, are we going to allow our freedom to be scaled back, whittled away, and we end up with nothing to leave our children?
Push your representatives, push the industries. As we talk about deep pockets, remember the fishing industries, Penn, Shimano, etc. plus all of the boat manufacturers included need to be made vividly aware of how this will affect them. Use gun control as an example. We can use the fishing industry to rally our cause. If only a handful of people control all of the fishing - how much need is there for rods and reels, boats and motors. We need to act upon it.

Thank you jczc2414! Fishing is our place to take a stand against tyranny. We need to show other Americans that a few patriots can peacefully defend the freedom they love with victories like the one against Vessel Monitoring Systems. We could take America back from our unruly public servants in no time IF enough Americans stood united in support of each other’s individual liberties that collectively make us free people. This fight is about more than just fishing, it is about FREEDOM! Are you with those of us who choose to fight or passively against us? Declare your good intentions or allow the deafening silence of apathy to declare your intentions for you.
“The price of apathy is to be ruled by evil men.” Plato
“Enforcing stupid laws is the essence of tyranny.” Edmond Burke
“If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or your arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.” Samuel Adams
Knew a guy once who said it would be cool to have 2 or 3 hundred boats show up at the state house and demand Haley listen to tax paying fishermen of this state…
Looks like playing nice is paying off big time…
capehorn 16, did anyone show up at the state house?
Being nice, polite, happy warriors is more effective than being a rude, belligerent, angry mob. The SAFMC would listen to us if 2 or 3 hundred people peacefully gave similar public comments at the meetings they INVITE us to. We need to start treating council meetings like the Fishermen’s Rallies so many people go to Washington D.C. for. We can take control of how our fisheries are managed IF just a few hundred patriotic fishermen would stand united behind a few simple solutions.

I’ve been to a few of these public comment meetings you speak of sir and they could give a fat rats ass what you or I have to say.I’ve been paying my dues to everyone that wants to fight these assholes like the rest of the good republicans on this site. Now they put another person on the board just as bad as Kupka who will be voting with his wallet and you think the happy warrior solution is the key to winning this fight?
Get an organized peaceful mob of fishermen together with time to take a day off and start acting like DEMOCRATS!!!
Embarrass these a-holes,shut down traffic, get on the news…Let everyone know we ain’t going to take this **** anymore.
I am patriotic as anyone you will ever meet, but something just doesn’t feel right when I have to beg for the right to fish in front of a few pinheads who INVITE me to a meeting that my patriotic ass is PAYING for!!!
When you guys get tired of playing pretty give me a buzz, until then I’m gone make them sum *****es catch my PATRIOTIC ASS and let a jury decide who the hell is crazy…
capehorn 16, your suggestion of an organized peaceful mob so thick it shuts down traffic and gets national media coverage is exactly what I am saying we have to do because they will NOT listen to a few fishermen all saying something different.
I will be driving about seven hours to give public comments at the September SAFMC meeting in Charleston. Are there 300 SC fishermen willing to meet me there?
Your not getting my point, what good is it to talk to a stacked crowd?
If you shut down traffic on a frontage road what does that accomplish?
I’m talking about letting Haley know we are not gonna take this sitting down.Circle the state house with a caravan of boats, someone will listen.
I could get at least 3 or 4 with boats to go myself.
I think folks from Cherry Grove down to Hilton Head would join in
on a trip to the capital…Having to give money to lobbyist
just to be ignored doesn’t seem to be working…
Freefish,
When is the September meeting?
Again, for everyone. Talk to the money. What good will it do us to have the fishing shutdown? What impact will it have on “Scout”, “Sea Fox”, Sea Hunt", and what ever other boat manufacturers in the stat will feel if they no longer have a market? Who will Penn sell there reels too? What about Bass Pro Shops, Cabellas, West Marine, Haddrells Point, Charleston Angler and other sell their goods too? This is where our power will lie. What about the marinas? No need to have a boat there if we cannot fish? These are our allies. We need to push them.

Haley does not care. She will appoint those that can help her campaign coffers. She likely will not be re- elected. Presenting a unified front to the SAFMC is the way to go. Fractures in the fishing community are easily exploited. When the recreational, and commercial fishers are on the same page things can happen. After all , were all fishermen.
We should pursue the conflict of interest members on the council and do what’s necessary to block these votes
New ideas with the same old results. No wonder the Dems will never lose again, their base knows how to use social media and a pissed off crowd.
They have not released the meeting agenda yet, but here are the dates and location.

It is too late to change Governor Haley’s or McCrory’s appointments. We can use this opportunity to push for changes in how appointments are made and amendments are approved. Most people did not think we could stop VMS, but we did because we stood united. We may not like the Red Snapper situation, but we stopped the closure of our entire seafloor from the NC/SC border seaward of 98’ of water because enough of us publicly opposed it. We need to find a few solutions everyone can rally behind and get hundreds of people to show up at the council meetings. You guys living in SC should invite Governor Haley to attend the Sept. council meeting and send her a copy of Squid Row’s explanation of catch shares. We need to invite all of our federal, state, and local legislators to the meetings. We can win this fight IF we work together.
When the VMS was first put on the table, the polling revealed that it would pass easily by 5 votes. A campaign was mounted that filled the meeting rooms and packed the members mail - and Email and constant ph calls. Then a few weeks before the New Bern NC meeting the word was - a tie with the prospect of Crabtree breaking with a yes vote. The council leaked that they were ignoring the letters - but I think this meant they were inundated. Then public & states legislators pressure brought the unanimous NO vote. Freefish 7 is right. Together we can get things done. But this is not to say that Capehorns idea is without merit. It will help - BUT its only one day. The letters and constant building daily contact with the council by a unified front of fishermen and elected polititans WORKED!! Kiss my AZZ Waugh & Cupka !! and lets put pressure on conflict of interest voting
The SAFMC Visioning Project is our chance to stand united behind a few positive solutions. We can achieve the same VMS results in the Visioning project IF enough of us will support our vision the same way we opposed being spied on. Please check out this link and let me know what you think of the solutions listed so far. Please feel free to share your own ideas. http://www.freefish7.com/safmc-visioning-project.html
Don’t forget about the SAFMC’s 29 proposed type 1 MPAs that would shut down some of the best trolling and bottom fishing areas along the southeast coast. Anyone interested in stopping these closures?
The type 1 MPAS are first on the agenda for the fall SAFMC meeting. Should be an interesting discussion.
Guys before you knock down Chris Conklin take the time to meet the guy. I have known him and his father for close to 15 years. I have fished recreationaly and commercial with Chris. He is a great guy willing to listen and reason with anyone. He will work for our best interests on the commercial and recreational side of things. I am proud of Chris for his appointment and glad to know he will support us and be our voice. Stop by and talk to him at Seven Seas Seafood in Murrells Inlet.
I hope for all of our sake you are correct sir.
The following statement by him though causes some concern in my view…
"I know that our fishery will never go back to the way it “was. That is why I support management options that are in place and working in other fisheries around the world.”
I read the “management options that are in place” as being closed seasons on healthy fisheries and MPAs. I believe the “options that are in place and working in other fisheries around the world” are Catch Shares.
I hope and pray that I am absolutely wrong on this, If I am I will come on here and say that I was wrong. It’s up to him to prove me wrong, The ball is in his court, Let’s hope he’s playing for us.
