Bait pen pics

Hey Joe,

You can get barrels like that at the old Moore Drum plant. Not sure what the plant name is now… But they are sill open. We buy 55 gallon drums from them to store our used solvents for disposal. It’s one block from our shop on Azalea Ave. Across from the old Metro Supply building. I think that is Industrial and Azalea. Cost around $40. I think.

If you don’t want to take the time to build your own:

Ive got one made out of a 30 gal plastic drum, It will keep bait for weeks! All day job to drill all the holes tho. Use a brick bolted to the bottom to sink faster and a noodle around the top.

Im building a bait pen and found this thread. For those who have a 55 gal drum, should I put holes on the bottom? If I don’t it will be heavier to pull up but also more likely to stay upright in the current next to the dock. How about 1 inch holes. Im only using for pin fish and menhaden.

Yes, I would put holes in the bottom too.

Here’s my pen. I built it over the summer and it’s still in use. Similar design. I wanted an oval instead of the circle.

Someone asked, the mesh is a landscape mesh. I got mine at Lowes, but I’m sure it’s easily found.

You can also use hardware cloth for the pen( metal kind ). You can attach the cloth to plastic tubing if you desire . Place a zinc to help keep it from rusting . We also used hardware cloth to make pig fish traps minus the zinc, however make them round . If square fish will bump into the sides and wont last very long .

I DONT HAVE A BOAT
BUT LOVE TO FISH> HINT

After using mine for a few times I pulled it and drilled holes in the bottom to drain it and keep the weight down. I also added a lock to keep the otters out, they could take off the clip I had in the hasp! Now I have to hide the key from them!!
