On a related topic, I was shopping at the old K-mart in Mount Pleasant looking for bargains while they were closing shop and ran into a group of guys taking measurements. I looked over the shoulder of one and he was holding a clip board with Dick’s Sporting Goods letterhead. I guess they may be going into that spot.
Also, coincidentally a few days ago, I overheard a couple developers discussing real estate deals over lunch and one of them confirmed that Academy Sports is coming to Summerville.
All this is just what I saw/heard and probably not verified by either company.
The only thing I typically buy at Bass Pro is stuff I’d normally order online anyhow, but buy at Bass Pro since they are the only game in town for some of the oddball stuff.
That being said, most of the guys at local stores can order you about anything. I’ve had ONCE that I asked for a price on a trolling motor at a local shop, and told him that I’d rather pay a little more and get locally than buy online. I never heard back from them, so I bought online.
Saying “I am offended” is telling everyone else that you cannot control your own emotions, and thus you need everyone else to do it for you.
I lived in South Florida and there were Bass Pro shops in Miami and Ft Lauderdale. There were also many local tackle shops in the same areas. Yes, Bass Pro took some of the business but not enough to make the local guys close shop. One thing you get locally that the big box stores don’t have is the personal service. You get to know the shop personnel and they know you. They usually are more qualified to answer your questions and give you what you need instead of making a sales goal for the month. The local shops usually carry superior quality “stuff” and stand behind it. I look forward to Bass Pro opening, especially if they have an Islamorada Fish House there.
I live in the upstate and when I drive to the coast I’m shure not going to stop a BPS to buy my tackle, I’m Gona go to a local man to support him for helping me with the information he can offer me!

I’ve been in several BPS stores, and have been underwhelmed at best. I’ve also been in a couple of Academy stores, and found they have a much better selection.
If BPS and Academy both come here, I can see Sports Authority either shutting down their outdoor section or just closing up shop. That store is horrible.
That would leave the local guys competing with BPS, Academy, and Dicks. As long as they continue offering good service they should still be ok.
There are many issues with Bass pro shop coming as far as it affects the local landscape. Here are just two. First BPS is receiving millions of dollars in incentives, tax breaks and concessions to come here. In essence the local business’s taxes and license fees are being used against them to lure in this competitor. Second over the years Haddrell’s Point, Atlantic Game and Tackle and the Charleston Angler have donate 100’s of thousands to local charities, conservation groups and fishing tournaments. If these charitable organizations want contributions from BPS they will be referred to the corporate office where national priorities come first. In addition the application process takes about a year. I know this from personal experience with the Myrtle beach store. Our local businesses are not afraid of competition but not when the politicians have stacked the deck heavily in the favor of the big box store.
I’m more excited for the hunting section of Bass Pro than the fishing to be honest. Between Walmart and the local shops I won’t leave Mt. Pleasant for fishing stuff, however if i’m interested in a new gun, or a nice selection of optics to try or something along those lines BPS in Summerville is worth the trip. The local shops have a few things in the store, and can order whatever you want, but you can’t just “Try and Compare” a lot of the hunting stuff like you can in a big store like BPS.
Academy has a very good gun selection and the people who work the gun section are very knowledgable. Well atleast at the one in Spartanburg I don’t know about other places
Old news Vince. You should visit more often. Word was, that you simply did not spend enough $ there and they suffered as a result. A couple of dozen MM each week didn’t cut it.
