best friend sunk my boat....now what????

If yall are good friends, then work it out. BUT friends are more important than material things. I learned this the hard way, but I speak from experience.

friends ARE more important than material things. if your buddy is a TRUE friend, he will try to make it right. otherwise you just flushed out a person that was posing as your friend, and you can move on.

if the engine isn’t locked up, the block can easily be salvaged
take out the spark plugs
get a heavy duty electric drill with a socket adapter and a socket that will fit the flywheel nut
trim up the engine
the switch may not work, but the trim motor will, its made to be underwater run 12 volts straight to it.
pour transmission fluid in all the cylinders
turn the motor over by hand slowly at first.
then while spraying lube (wd-40 etc) in to the intake of each cylinder, spin it over with the drill
before doing this, drain all the carb bowls, and disconnect the fuel pump.
there will be some water in the fuel.
do this for several days in a row
if yopu don’t keep turning it over, it will lock up.
then try to find a matching motor that is blown up, cheap. that way you can use all the electrical parts off of the donor motor

I had the same thing happen with an old boat at my lake place. Heavy rains, bilge pump failed and she went down in 10’ of fresh water. Long story short, I did what ChrisV said except I used Marvel Mystery Oil. Also, my starter still worked (for a couple months) so I was able to blow the remainder of the oil out of the cylinders by using the starter. Used a couple or three gallons of mystery oil. I used the boat for the next 3 years before selling and it ran better than ever…with the exception of having to throw a rope around the flywheel to start it. I didn’t even change the spark plugs! It ain’t no mystery…this beer’s history!

I remember years ago before I left for basic training Dad telling me. “Son, if you ever loan anything or loan money to anyone do it because you can afford to give it away. Loaning anything to anyone is the quickest way to end a friendship if you expect to get it back.”

Actually that is closer to the truth than I would like to admit. I’ve learned the hard way that Dad pretty much hit the nail on the head.

Loan if you must, but do it with a contract or pure acceptance of loosing value.

he wasn’t a friend to begin with if he never offered to even help fix it.

Yes. Years ago, we decided to not loan anyone money, and we have stuck to it about 90% of the time. What we do instead is offer to give the people the money they are asking to borrow. But there is one catch: they have to attend a Dave Ramsey course which we will pay for. Two people have taken us up on the offer, and they gave us the money back that we gave them, plus they learned some good principles about dealing with money.

I have to agree with this… Chaulk it up as a loss and ditch this so called “friend”. Buy yourself another boat and insure it. Don’t let anyone borrow it!

Yep, expensive life lesson, but will be worth it in the future… Never let someone borrow or use your boat!! If your weekend situation is the same, sell the boat and start saving for another one. When you can start to use it and enjoy it again, buy… this way, you do not have a boat sitting around being neglected…

A bad day fishing is much better than a good day at work.
