Best reel options

Picked up 2 TLD25’s and asked Haddrell’s if they had winter specials on combo’s and just like someone said, they gave me the rod practically free. Got 2 TLD25’s on Billfisher 30-80 Trolling rods and spooled with 30lb MoMoi Diamond Hi Viz for $219 each.

Roller rods are nice, but require maintenance to keep in optimum condition.

I took a couple of my big tuna sticks in to a well known tackle shop owner/big tuna fisherman to have roller guides put on them. He told me not to do it. He also told me that the only guide that needs to be roller is the tip. I left the rods stock with no rollers. They work just fine.

Hey FloridaBoy, you live in Lexington? I live in the Irmo area right near the lake murray dam.

Yep Exit 51 on 20.

We’ll have to get up and do some fishing. I striper fish a few times every week and then try to head out the coast as often as i can.

I’m right down the road from y’all, in Chapin. We try to hit the coast when the seas are good. Haven’t got on the stripers yet.

TLD25s are the ticket for first reels in my opinion. Many used available everyday.

Trolling for striper is the closest thing you can get to saltwater, except for the real thing obviously. I am supposed to head out of charleston this weekend but the reefcast isnt looking that great.

Let me know if you plan to go Saturday. I’m going to plan to go bearing we get a 3’ or less forecast with swell and not stacks!

OK…ill definitely be down there. Im heading down thursday night and staying until sunday. right now the forecast is showing something around 8.5 on 8 for saturday at the SE bouy, so if it stays like that ill be fishing inshore. its been changing every day so hopefully it will get better. Thursday looks amazing, 2 on 11. but i dont think ill be able to make it down thursday in time to fish

Where are you seeing Saturday’s forecast with wave/period predictions? Wednesday/Thur looked fantastic last I looked. Unfortunately boat won’t be delivered til Friday around lunch and I’ll be spending the rest of the day on Lake Murray learning the ropes.

WindFinder and ReefCast both show wed/thur looking great but then the wind and waves pick up big time on friday around 1pm. I am probably going to end up just waking up real early friday and heading straight out to the ledge and troll for a few hours and then head closer in around lunch and do some bottom fishing. great looking new boat btw

Very smart. Give it a few days, or a few weeks, to learn her inshore. Don’t want to be learning 40 miles offshore in snotty weather.

And TLD 25s will handle 90% of anything you are likely to catch around here.

All my learning will be on the Lake so I can get to any shore quick and easy with a good breeze! I’m not expecting it to be much of a transition of learning. But i’m definitely stoked to get fishing. I’ve already started brainstorming trips for the spring/summer. I’d like to go to Edisto (parents have a spot with a couple campers on some friends land) to leave the wife and kids and the guys head out for 2-3 days straight of fishing (bearing proper conditions)

yeh thats probably a good idea. Friday is starting to look fantastic, showing 1 on 12 in the morning. it doesnt get much better than that. I’m hoping i can find someone else that will be out there friday so i can have a contact if anything was to go wrong, so that im not out there by myself.

I hear that. Don’t shoot a window if it looks like it’s gonna get snotty. Don’t want an issue to arise while seas slop up.

yeh, the way its looking right now i wont be going out too far…MAYBE to the jetties but it may even be too bad for that

Hey I know what you are going through. I bought a new boat going on four years ago and had to get fishing gear at the same time. I am upgrading one fishing reel and pole now at a time, it takes a while sometimes. I started off four set if you like I could sell the old ones I don’t use most of them now since I have upgraded. My number is 910 494 4140 if you want some pic of the set just call.
