Based on this discussion it appears the law and accounting involved are simple. Theoretically this simplification creates smaller government and reduces taxes. Would you prefer more paper work for transferring ownership and higher taxes to account for the additional paperwork or the keep it simple stupid approach that appears to be in place?
“For tax year commencing December 31, 2014”, this is the statement from the bill. If I was to start a utility service, or rent something “commencing” on a certain date and then terminating that service on a certain date, then I should pay for the dates of service. Not for service prior to, nor after the service was terminated. I paid my income taxes for SC until I became a legal resident of FL. For those that didn’t completely read my original post, I moved, I didn’t sell my boat.
Yes, contesting this is probably like spitting in the wind, but it just doesn’t make sense. Another government money grab.
If it is for the year 2014 taxes, why in the world would the county wait 14 months for the payment to be due? They are losing millions in tax revenue that they could be collecting today for 2015 boat ownership.
