I was fishing the West Fork of the Bitterroot river in Montana this summer and learned that Fish and Wildlife actually closed some sections of the rivers to drift boats and rafts on some days to give the shore and wade fishermen more opportunity. The thinking is that boats have access to much more water than shore and wading fishermen. By the way, catching West Slope Cut throat trout on #8-10 Spruce Moth dry fly is a blast.
if the dock fisherman is their first, move on.
if the boat fisherman is already there, dockfisherman move to another dock or wait.
or maybe ask the other group if it is ok to slip in.
too much unnecessary anger… whats that about?
For the price of property, property tax, the cost of building a dock, etc… If I walk to the end of my dock I’m gonna fish it. Now I won’t throw on top of a boater or be a jerk to them, but I am gonna fish. The guy in boat has the ability to move, not so simple fishing from a dock P.K.
Honestly I can not understand any boater staying around a dock with people on it. When I’m in a boat the last thing I want is to be around a bunch of people.
This used to be a talk between dad and son or mentor and student, but I understand the change in society and the need to have these discussions in an open forum. The answer to this situation, as well as pretty much any other situation, is picture yourself on a dock fishing, whether you got there first or not, what would you WANT the boat fisherman to do? Now, picture yourself as the boat fisherman approaching a dock with someone fishing on it or the owner walks down and wants to fish. Go back to what you wanted the boat fisherman to do and DO THAT!
It is simply putting yourself in teh position of teh other person and treating them the same way you would want to be treated in that same situation! Sound familiar?
Allegheny Osprey, I lived in Missoula for 13 years and completely agree with your assessment of the west slope trout. The west fork of the root is awesome.

I seldom fish another mans dock, but if I do and a family comes down to fish off the dock or just enjoy the dock. I move on. I’m in a boat and they are land locked. Too many places to fish to crowd around other people. I guess everyone has their own version of etiquette. So if you are fishing another person’s dock and they decide to come down it to fish, you wouldn’t move on?

The walleye are biting great in Erie. I think pk has lost it and I would move on if someone came down on the dock when I was fishing nearby. I just hate that I can’t run from the Cooper to the wando because of the docks in Beresford. I looked up nowell creek and I don’t know where they got that,it’s always been known as Beresford to the locals.
If you are on a private dock fishing and boat starts to cornhole your dock, turn on a strong hose and let it flow into the water from about 10 feet high. It will shut the bite off.

I don’t know that I’d do that. For one, it will shut off the bite for you too. Second, if you start doing things to hinder someone from fishing, you could open yourself up to legal (harassment) issues and a visit from a DNR LEO. The dock may be private property but the water around it (and the fish) isn’t and two wrongs don’t make a right.
