Boat Ramp Tales...

i love the boat ramp. mine is limehouse. i live close by and spend a fair amount of time there tossing the net, watching the water and the shenanigans. i convinced my wife to go with me last night and she was not disappointed. we walked out on the dock and there is a little duracraft with a 25 merc. gentleman and his lady start it up and immediatly back out in to the middle of the river. not more than 2 min and this motor lights up. flames, smoke, cursing. luckily the poor fellow had an extinguisher onboard and got it out pretty quick. another man loading up drops his boat back in the water and rushes out to pull him back. mr. merc. was angry and i think refused help cus he fired the motor back up. i could not believe that thing was running. he idled for about 10 min put her in forward and the motor lights up again! the cursing was epic! i felt awful for the guy because my boat petered out on me 2 weeks ago, but man it was funny. helpful citizen pulled him back to the dock. there is always a few people like myself hanging out over there so he was offered help but declined in poor form. never a dull moment at the ramps.

A good friend of mine grew up on Wappoo near firehouse landing. we would take a 6 pack and sit on the tailgate of his pickup and watch the fun. We were spectating one afternoon, probably 1985 or 86. These two guys drive their very shiny, overpowered, Stratos bass boat up to the dock. One guy staggers off the boat and gets into a brand new, stickers still on window,Ford pickup (Ranger type). The paint job matched the boat. After several attempts to back the trailer down he gets it sorta sideways on the ramp, but approachable anyway. The boat driver idles up and for some reason nails the throttle just as he gets over the trailer. The bow goes up and impales itself on the winch stanchion. The driver stumbles out of the truck to see what happened and the truck starts rolling down the ramp. Guy gets into rolling truck and gets door closed just as water comes in. The tide was running toward the cut at its usual pace and away goes the truck, boat trailer and crew. The whole thing gets hung up on some pilings that used to be there. Dude crawls out of open window. Captain is screaming for someone to help them. Empty beer cans and other flotsam is washing off of the boat. Truck is going down. Firemen are now at the dock trying not to laugh. We are rolling on the ground.Guys wind up in marsh behind the playground. Boat and truck are anchored by piling.Eventually the two guys get into a drunken brawl at the landing and are taken by police. Vehicles were recovered later by a tow truck and help of a john boat.

thats why w esit at the cut with friends…cost nothing…bring your own food and drink and you’ll never tire of the things you see

barbawang. I use that ramp exclusively do to location and have seen some crazy stuff there.

13skulls. I have been in that neighborhood since 04. That boat ramp is awesome. Saw a guy last summer unstrap boat (maybe sea hunt, don’t remember) and proceed to back in at low tide. He pumped the brakes a little to hard and boat landed on dry ramp. It sat there all day till tide came back up.

penfishn. Spot on. Free entertainment and beautiful. Lots of fun.

jipride. I got pictures of a guy that the same thing happened to last year at that landing. We were coming in from the 2010 JIYC Mackerel tournament. He was able to get the boat back on the trailer. From what I heard later he had changed from bunks to rollers on his trailer, and away she went. Very little damage.

Awesome! I have a “custom” 7 tone red Toyota. Say hey if you see me.

Same for anybody else.

function over fashion- my red truck has holes rusted through it

i can name crimson, maroon, scarlet… rust… i’ll say hi if i see more reds than that!

Should be easy to spot. If I am down that way I will say hey. I use Limehouse landing though. Firehouse landing parking is a bit tight for a 30 foot boat towed by a diesel excursion !

Yeah We go down to IOP Marina on Sat-Sun about 6-7 witha cooler of beer Call it the Gong Show. We even applaud when some guy comes in and his wife loads the boat. Then give a few hoots when the drunks dunk the car or play bumper boats. Glad my boat is tied to the dock and I don’t have to deal with the rookies anymore.

We were once launching our boat from the IOP slip. I nosed the boat up to the dock waiting for my wife who was parking the truck and trailer, because she’s good like that. While I was waiting for her to show up, another truck and trailer show up to launch their boat. They back down into the water, exhaust under the water and all they were back so far. They get the boat separated and off it goes. The driver puts the car in gear and all you hear is the sound of screeching tires. The car won’t budge. The noise attracts the attention of the folks around the slip. They can rock backwards, but not move forwards! They had gone so far back, the trailer had gone off the concrete!! Two young men who were watching go into the water, dive down, and try to lift the trailer back onto the concrete. This was a two axle trailer btw. The combined effort of all got the trailer loose and the folks went on their way. It was quite a sight.

A coulpe of weekends ago, we are pulling up to Shem Creek to pull out and I see a nice cat with twin Zukis launching. Guy get the boat launched and his trailer starts floating downstream and ends up at a heck of an angle. He pulls away and has to drag his trailer across the curb seperator to retrieve it. Comes back and says that the trailer floats as well as the boat. Craziest thing I have seen in a while. If he ever launches at Wappoo, the current would jack-knife the trailer so bad he may not get it out. Gotta be a way that poor guy can fix his trailer from floating like that.
