“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”
I think the Barbie reels have a little better drag system but this should hoss some groupers up
I have two 888’s in my garage as well as snoopy and barbie combo’s. They have killed lots of fish. I need to find an old bream buster to keep in the boat to complete the circle. Could sabiki up some nice bait with a 20ft bream buster.
I used to wear the c bass and sheephead out with a zebco, man. When we’d get into the creek around a bunch of trash in a bend, I’d catch the spottail with a super bream buster and a big slip cork. That long pole can keep them out of the snags!
Anyhow, back to the zebco- I have seen a 30lb spottail caught out of a pond with a zebco 33 and 10lb test. You can catch a grouper too. Just follow him around until he gets tired. Don’t let him know he’s been hooked, and he won’t pop you off.
You guys crack me up!!! Now junior has a pocket full of $$$$ but says he is so confused he is not going to buy anything! haha! We plan to get off Sunday and maybe a few knot heads with the zebco will help him sort this out.
For a good $69 rod ,look at the ugly stick tiger jigging rods.I have 2 with penn torque 200’s,and one with a cabo 70.Definately come or bleed setups. That said the one normally in my hand is shimano trevala xxh with a torque 100.300yrds of JB 50 lb braid with 100 yds of 80 on top.80 lb flouro leader.Bimini and a bristol knot. Not as much drag with the penns, but not many people can handle 30+ pounds. The shimano action is slow for me.Like it a little stiffer.
with the Quantum (BOCA) ugly stick setup, your looking at about $170 for a great all around rig.(Look at the Boca 60).
If a Star Rod breaks in half from an AJ you tried to fight from the gunnel, then you can walk into Haddrell’s or Atlantic and swap it out for another one…
Same is true with trevalas except their’s are lifetime warranties. The cheap star aerials I have are 5yrs I think. I honestly have only seen one break from fishing, and it wasn’t one of mine. Have seen a lot of shimano and shakespeare rods break, but they are usually replaced without any problem.
Not sure about ugly stick’s warranty policy. I broke a few when I was a kid and got one of them replaced by talking with folks who worked for Shakespeare. I believe they have a 7yr warranty and you need to mail them in.
Rods breaking during a trip are a huge bummer, but at least some of them have warranties where you only buy them once.
I agree with Capt. Scott, the trevalas are pretty limp. Don’t have much power for big fish, and that’s why you see him fishing 50lb line on their 80-200lb rated rod…
Less of an issue with spinners, but the rod still loses its ability to work when it’s maxed out and doesn’t have complex enough recovery and power from grip to tip.
I can’t say enough good stuff about Seeker, although I know it’s way out of budget. You could find one used looking on eBay and some of the west coast forums where more are around. I’ve talked to the folks who design and build the rods, and they’re fishermen just like us who love hearing fishing stories. I like supporting USA made stuff that’s designed and produced with a lot of pride. Kind of like supporting your local tackle shops. Seeker has a lifetime warranty against defects like the shimano trevalas, but also if you slam a seeker in a tailgate (your fault), you can get a new rod at a big discount- similar to how gloomis operates.
Boca jigging rods have a little more power than shimano, but I do like the trevalas for the $$$ because of their light weight. For reference, the heavy seeker hercules, the boca heavy I have, and the xxh trevala I still have all weigh about the sa
