SkinneeJ, Thanks for the pro tip about eating Bonita. Next fall when your in the woods find a Persimmon tree. It’s best to find them before the frost gets them. The red ones are pretty to look at but take a big bite from a green one and life will never be the same for you again. Enjoy!!!

Hmmm... That sounds like it would be great garnish for some nice warm bonita strips.

Ha! I did this ONCE when I was about 10 walking to the deer stand and my buddies dad told me to try one. 25 years later I can still taste that thing…

Are Bonita fish big?

5 to 25 lbs. The Bonita (little tunny) push the bait toward the surface where the birds can dive and get em. You gotta be pretty hungry to eat a bonita

Just to clarify, Bonito and Little Tunny are two different, yet similar fish…

Unless you eat it raw. Don’t bleed them, or you are getting rid of the tastiest part. I recommend everyone taste one at some point. The really dark part which some people call the “bloodline” is the most tender and juicy. It’s basically the “filet mignon”. It totally melts in your mouth. I promise you, if you taste one, life will never be the same for you again.

Enjoy!!!

SAVAGE!!! thanks skinnee needed the laugh! ive tried them a time or 2 in small portions (figured it cant be worse than military slop) and will continue to use bonito as shark bait. i messed up and bled it out but tried some raw with soy/wasabi (not horrible but not amazing either), grilled plain (not good), and teryaki marinated/grilled (not horrible). that being said they do put up a good fight and are something to reel in.

The best thing you can do when you get on a red hot little tunny bite is to fill your box when them. Don’t ice them down because it makes the meat mushy. You want them lukewarm when you get back to the dock. When you get back into cell phone range, call the wife. Tell her to get the soy sauce ready and for her to call every friend, neighbor, and family member you have, for a sushi throw down at the house. It will be an epic party!!! Some people will never look at fish the same way again! And you will be the hero and center of attention!!!
