For creek bait all you need is 5-6’ at the most. If you know how to read the water to see bait or know where some bait holes are then you could make due with a 3 footer. I’m 5’-7" and I’ll usually throw a 5’ net with extra rope. I’m casting off docks mostly so I need to be able to throw 30’. This size gives me the reach without wearing me down as fast. Plus they are cheaper when smaller so WHEN (not IF) you screw up it doesn’t hurt the wallet as much.

First, Most, Biggest

I grew up throwing a 5 foot in the creeks, gets me all the mullet and shrimp I need in a few throws.

So you get one and toss it yet? Haddrell’s will sell you a good one and show you how to do it.

Nobody has mentioned this but basically the more you spend the easier the net will work for you. A $40 net will be very stiff and very difficult to fully open. Better nets are way easier to use.

I just picked one up yesterday. I picked up a Betts camo Old Salt 6 footer from a local guy. He bought it, tried to throw it a few times, gave up and put it on a shelf. I figured for 30 bucks, it would be a perfect beginner net. Now…the practice begins.

If it has been sitting up ,try putting a lil fabric softerner in 5 gallon bucket with warm water, soak net, rinse and it will be easier to throw. I practiced in an empty parking lot, that way it had nothing like grass or sticks to get caught. The first few times your gonna be swearing!!! stay with it and like the others said the more you throw the better you will get. The first time you throw from the boat will be a little different,I had several who said they had it ,and ended up in the water.Best of luck and have someone take pictures:smiley:

Interesting, but I had forgotten about her and just realized that I haven’t seen a post from her in a LONG, LONG time. Not to derail this thread, but what happened to her? Just curious, if anyone cares to expound.

As far as nets go, if you want a quality one, Tim Wade is the way to go.

I think the best how to video is on the Striper Soup website! I learned 50 years ago to use my teeth and have trouble doing any thing else but it is a lot easier to open a big net this way. I realy have to think when i use there method, it is so easy to get the net to open and spread.

Just found this on you tube (more mackrel than I can handle) now that is castneting!
