Casting Big Reels

I agree with the idea of less grease, but heavy on oil I don’t agree with. Bearings or bushings in a reel only have a limited amount of surface area. A drop of two of oil is all most reels need to adequately lube a reel. Too much oil does nothing, except possibly migrate into the drag, where it doesn’t belong.

Perhaps I’m misunderstanding the previous post, but more is less when lubing a reel, especially a casting reel. Too much oil also can hinder casting distance as it may slow down the bearings. That may not be an issue with the Corrosion X but it can be a problem with some oils.

Do it correctly, don’t over do it!

Let me try to clarify my previous post. When you minimize the amount of grease, you need to increase the amount of oil and ensure all internal metal parts are coated. In a salt water environment all of the internal metal components, especially the bearings, need an adequate level of protection, preferably a good grease (Penn Reel Grease, or Yamalube). Check out the Alan Tanni Website. They have tutorials on almost any reel made and how to properly tear it down and service them. More often than not, they do not come the factory with very good protection. Too much grease will tend to slow down a reel if you are going for distance casting. I generally just drop mine over the side and don’t do a lot of casting so I grease all internal metal components for corrosion protection as well as lubrication. To get more distance, use a bare minimum of grease on the gears, a drop or two of Corrosion X in the bearings, and make sure all other components have a coating of Corrosion X or similar oil. It is very light oil and excellent corrosion protection. Get familiar with your gear enough to service it yourself, or have it done as needed by a professional. Nothing wrong with greasing your drag washers if they are carbon fiber. Use Cal’s Drag Grease for that and use it sparingly wiping of the excess. Drag will operate much smoother and produce much less heat.

Thanks Long Enuff, no disagreement at all. That makes more sense. Protecting the reel is important too.
