Catching bait

Don’t be afraid to use threadfins, when there are thousands around and no herring that’s what they’re eating. I have used them many times with success in the winter when I couldn’t find herring. Also the light on the dock back in Siesta Cove holds bait. I’ve caught some really big herring there. Never a lot, usually 2 or 3 per cast. But there are usually some big 8" ones mixed in with the normal sized herring. As the water gets cold the herring disappear and threadfins move in.

Are gizzards more durable than herring? Can they be kept alive in the average livewell on a boat?

SRR is on a public road. I use the ramp all the time. The flood last year completly covered the whole place and they have been closed ever since. Great place to put in in late winter and early spring. Hope you don’t get shot

Gizzards are striper candy! Have to treat them good though, don’t want them turning brown and loosing their scales.

They will also red nose quickly if not taken care of. I have had them live for months in my 300 gal tank at home in cool weather. In fact I had one last winter from Oct till April he was about 14" He swam under ice a week or two. He died of a broken heart I think!

Nothing wrong with gold gizzards, we call them golden nuggets. Yes pearls are better but golds are great too…black gizzards are a no no usually, Although I have caught my fair share of fish on black gizzards.

During certain times of the year I catch them and they will already be black. I have found if they are black when u catch them they won’t change to any other color. And you can not kill them for some reason, they just wont die. Same goes for black headed herring. I have caught herring that have the whole top of its head is black. They just wont die…lol…

I usually catch the black gizzards below a tailrace or swift moving water… Yes the Gizzard shad are more durable than herring but you still need an oval, aerated, filtered tank to keep them pristine.

If you’ve had fun catching fish on the transom bait, you are welcome…

I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
