Catching carp on the fly rod...

Sorry man I neglected the pictures, I post on so many of these I forget I will take the pictures tonight, tied some flies for my trip tomorrow morning

Bragging may not bring happiness,
but no man having caught a large fish,
goes home through the alley.

np. Saw a carp this morning and a couple yesterday. They seem very spooky too.

hey skinnee - met your brother a few days ago. Well, have known him for awhile he works across the street but just connected the dots. Said you guys have a trip coming up to do some fishing…but now can’t remember where he said you all are heading.

My pig of the day:

Fished for a little longer today. Saw a couple dozen peacocks in the lake but some were a bit spooky. I got 2 peacocks, 1 largemouth, and 2 mayan ciclids… My buddy Dave got 3 peacocks.

Small world! My boat is up in the Lantana\Boynton Beach area. That might have been what he was telling you. I live in Miami, but keep the boat up there. He and his wife\kids are heading down here to see us and I am goign to take them out to do some sort of fishing (whatever is biting then).

Skinnee-

Carp will eat flies pretty well. We catch em here in the upstate on the lake pretty regular. GREAT fighters, and fun to sight cast to. Google “carp flies” and you’ll get an idea of what to use. I like a weighted fly that looks like a gotcha, with a bunch of hair on the body… dark brown and black are my go to colors. Get your fly right in front of them and twitch as they come near. Then hold on. Good luck, looks like you have a small slice of Heaven right there in your backyard!

Posted in the flies too, but here are the “carp” flies … I can tie some for ya if you just cover my material cost, because its rather easy to tie …

OK, does that mean I can stop looking for peacock bass in every pond around Charleston??? You are catching peacocks in Miami, not the lowcountry? Minor detail…

I’m jealous now, thought I had a shot at finding peacock around here.

Negative. A Mayan Cichlid looks like a bream, but has the warpaint of a peacock bass. They are also much more aggressive than your typical bream.

The FWC stocked peacock bass and mayan cichlids in all of the canals around here in the mid 80’s to create a new fishery. Their research showed that those two species could not survive the winters much further north of South Florida. I don’t think you see them much further north of Palm Beach and even the ones there are much smaller. Any further north and they die out during the winters.

The oscars and tilapia down here were illegally introduced privately (not FWC) and considered “invasive” species.

That would be cool, but I think you need a heated pond for them. The coolest thing about these guys is that they seem to be active right smack in the hottest part of the day. I've caught 100% of mine between the hours of noon-4pm. You can kind of see in my picture that my lake has some shallow areas around the edges of it that extend out about 10' or so before a drop off. I'll do a lap around the lake sometime after lunch and I will see the peacocks cruising the flats. So, it's pretty much 80% sight fishing. I'll do a blind cast once in a while, but most of the fish I catch, I see before I cast. Also, they like a very fast presentation. I don't think I could work the fly much faster. You can work it past them 15 times at a normal pace, but the second you try to zip it past them as fast as you can, will a lot of times trigger a strike.

So far, in the lake, I have seen:

Peacock bass
Mayan Cichlid
Bream
Large Mouth Bass (3 lbs biggest I have seen yet)
Catfish (4-5 lbs)
Garfish
Carp

If there was ever a doubt who’s boy you are, there isn’t anymore LOL
