Dear Bait…You got really good advice on this thread re. fishing the jetties. I would add that you want to be cautious above all else. Wear your life jacket…the new types that are small comfortable and inflatable are expensive and worth every penny. I’ve caught king mackerel out of a 14’ skiff out there, big black fish, trout, spot tails, even hooked stone crabs, but I’ve also come as close to dying out there as anywhere I’ve fished. I about bought the farm out there fishing the dynamite hole too long after the wind came up and turned the “Deadman” between Fort Sumter and Sullivan’s Island into 6 footers churning like a Maytag washing machine. Started out flat calm at 7:00AM on a 75 degree April morning, but that 65 degree water pounding me in the face and chest froze me to the point of losing control of my hands on the wheel. With tackle boxes floating around my feet, I managed to make it around the point at Sullivans’ Is. and into the calm water of the ICW. It took me a full 30 minutes sitting in the sunshine to get right enough before making it back to Shem Creek and putting that (**() boat on the trailer. That’s not to mention the adrenaline rush of having your anchor stuck in the rocks as a nuclear sub noses a 8 foot bow wake into the bell buoy’s…man I don’t miss those things at all!
