I would be interested as well. Definitely in for fishing and I am also certified to dive but would need a refresher course or someone with experience with me prior to jumping in. I can run my boat as well. Just send me the details once they are available.
By the way. A team off commercial divers came in today with 700lbs of lions. Plenty out their.

Yep. There’s been a couple days in the last few weeks where the money fish just disappeared. Water change, full moon, whatever…but they straight-up disappeared. If you’re overnighting 2-3 days, and have to make the most of it, you can easily put a couple hundred lions on the deck in a day. They are everywhere and they are so thick on some structure that there’s no need to leave. You couldn’t kill them all in a week. Especially in some of the deep wrecks for some reason. The trick to killing the big numbers of lions is being organized. Get the right equipment and get a system and anyone on here could bring home 50+ in a day. By the way, the bucket trick in the video posted here looks pretty simple, cheap and effective.
yellabird, seems like NOAA would want to purchase some of those lion keepers and pole spears for every diver around… I wonder if there is some grant money sitting out there… Maybe DNR would know???

I know what you’re getting at…but let’s just say that’s funny. NOAA actually doing something that makes sense???
I will check, but don’t hold your breath. Pun intended.

They were paying cash for flounder racks at one point. I think they were giving up to $50 per trip. Maybe they want to do a STUDY on lionfish in our area. Never know!
SkinneeJ,
Does your sudden interest in this post mean you intend to take part in the lionfish rodeo? Surely you want to see some of your prime spots cleaned of the enemy fish…

Depends on when. I have a general fear of commitment, so I try not to make promises until I have to... You can say that I am interested though...
Tico Tiger- I am working on things and will start a new thread once I have some concrete things organized from our regulatory officials. Thanks for the interest everyone
Alex… Good to see you on this board. The lionfish in Charleston are not quite as thick as what you have in the Pensacola area, however, we do make up in size, what we lack in density. Hope you can make it to the event (when officially announced).
The spearing crowd up here usually targets larger meat-fish, so this will be an entirely new style of event. Should be a fun learning experience for most of us pole-spear rookies.

PS: If a fly lost it’s wings, would it be called a walk?
Are you sure they are in less than 85 ft of water off of SC coast? Have not seen that yet. Mostly seeing them 85 fsw or deeper and that’s a pretty short dive for shooting those little fellows.
Upstate
I have seen them as shallow as 60ft in good numbers. Every spot is different. If you are diving Nitrox 32-34 mix, then you should have plenty of time (20-30min) in 80-110ft to clean the lionfish off most spots. They will often be very close to each other making it easy to kill 10-20 fish in short time. I have seen some monster lions in the 6-8lb range. They clearly aren’t as big as grouper, snapper, or any other trophy fish you are targeting, but there are no limits on these fish and as an invasive species, we need to do our part in keeping the numbers down. They are also delicious to eat. Hopefully you will take part in the fun!
Wow, didn’t realize they had gotten that bad. I’ll be as far out as 6HI next week. I promise to do my part if I happen up on one of these “undocumented residents”. Invasive Species sounds a little callous and don’t dare say Illegal Alien that’s just not nice any more.
Sorry for the lack of update regarding this. I have a major project going on right now and realized a few weeks back I would not have the time to make this happen in 2015. This event is still going to happen. Late June 2016 after the migratory meat fish run and consistent visibility will be the target time frame for this. There are Lionfish on nearly every piece of artificial structure and most reefs from ~~ 60ft on out…including the secret areas that our tax dollars paid for. Some spots are loaded and some spots just have a few fish on it. I killed 8 lions on a local wreck yesterday, some big some small.
