Charleston Nearshore/Kiawah Reef

Drive down to Rockville and put in at Cherry Point landing and go out the North Edisto by Deveaux Banks. Closest that I know of.

The best landing for 4ki is cherry point! Its the closest and a very short run by boat if the weather goes bad. Its a little longer run by truck but the F250 gets 17mpg & the boat gets 2. Look at my last post & see what you can get.On a calm day they will be on the surface by the hundreds. We hang a cannonball 5ft. behind the boat & the spades will come to it and attack like Piranha. You can dip net a few on any tide line out there. I freeline 20lb. power pro with a 1/0 hook buried in a peeled piece of shrimp or cut jellyfish to the schools on the surface & hang on! I tried floro & other leader mat. but thease fish are strong and head straight for the wreak & will cut you off, fishing with light spinning rods. If you take the wife the beaches (inside the breakwater) on the Edisto are wonderfull on the way back in. we are going Sun. morning feel free to hail us on 68, we will be glad to help you out. There are a lot of good people on this site that will help you, just cull through all the little people with little else to do i.e. my last post on spades.Hammer them when you can & leave some for others when you can.

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

How do you hang a large jellyball behind the boat without a hook? Tie line around it really tight? The spades sure do sound like some fun. Hope I can get into them

Hey florida boy,

I fish the reefs quite frequently. Haven’t been out latley b/c the weather has sucked but I am going this weekend hopefully. Go to 4KI, the kiawah reef. Also try lowcountry anglers reef which is in close proximity to the kiawah reef. Charleston nearshore is way to overfished and isn’t out far enough to get on some decent fish. Jellyballs, also known as cannonball jellies, are really big and spadefish love them. You can catch them around inlets and a lot of times they wash up on the beach. If you are going out of stono inlet just go on the backside of kiawah and you should be able to find some washed up on the beach. If not, you should see them floating on top of the water. just scoop them up with your net.

But caution, if you go out of stono inlet be careful, especially at low tide. Lots of breakers and shallow water.

As far as bait goes, if you are out early in the am, try sightcasting for spanish mackeral with some clark spoons. Also try to slow troll some live menhaden if you are able to catch some. Could pick up a king mackeral or barracuda. Live menhaden on the bottom or live finger mullet could get some good bottom fish as well. Try jigging some grubs for weakfish or big redfish.

Spadefish will be on the top of the water. They will be in schools of usually 30 or more. I rig up my jellballs on a fish stringer and let them hang maybe 5-10 feet from the boat. This will attract the spadefish if they are there. Then, this is the trick. I use about 30 pound test line and tie the smallest hook I have on the end of it. Clamp on 2-3 split shots above the line and cast the smallest piece of FRESH shrimp or Jellyball into the middle of the school. Then hang on b/c those fish will take you for a ride! Good luck to ya.

Don’t let any of these retards on this site discourage you. Go out and have fun!

Like i said before, use a fish stringer.

ohhh…gotcha…looks like since it’s my first time going alone out of this area i’m going to stick to the charleston harbor. Have spoke to friends who are locals and say that going out of folly beach area you can hit some oyster beds and get stuck if you don’t know where you are going…Maybe hit the Fredricks day barge or some of the hard bottom markings…going to troll for kings on the way out and around some reefs to see what I can get. I hope to have a GREAT post for you guys tomorrow evening or Sunday a.m. Hope to have some BIG kings in the box…

4:13 a.m., up and ready to go. Giving wifey the benefit of the doubt and letting her sleep in til 5:30, which she thinks is just absolutely ridiculous. Hope my first trip out of Charleston on the new boat, alone does great…Never been on the Ocean without other piers who are as educated or more educated about it than me…Needless to say a few are worried, looks like a great day and I’m sure a few of you guys will be on Channel 68 if I have a problem

Okay, time for the fishing report… to start off i’d like to say, “WHAT A DAY”…Left home at 5:30 a.m. since wife woke up 1 hr early which was very nice since I was up at 4:00 loading the boat and ready to go. Morning was perfect, making good time, UNTIL…
Exit 187, hwy 78 in Ridgeville, we get off to take a quick bathroom break before we get to Wal-Mart in Charleston, and BAM, tire shreds off trailer! Still holding air just no tread. Nobody around can seem to give directions to a close tire shop. Finally get good directions, pass the tire shop, go to turn around and BOOM, the tire gives…3 hrs later we’re back on the interstate, it’s now 9:45 and I’m furious but again happy b/c i’m going fishing. Get to our Walmart exit and “what’d you know?”, there is no walmart here…it’s been closed for a long time it appears (darn GPS), we then get on interstate again to cross over big bridge and i’m hoping I find a baitshop or store on 17 to get needed supplies. Took wrong turn, got turned around, crossed back and forth over bridge again and get back on track (another 30 minute delay). I get to the back roads going to Remley’s point to launch. Still no supplies purchased. Now i’m PRAYING there may be a bait shop at landing or near it. NOTHING…go back to 17 and go to K-mart…they have NOTHING! Now it’s 11:00 and i’m more furious then I’ve ever been before… I do a few searches on GPS and find the local favorite, Haddrells. GREAT, now I can get my stuff and get on the water. Get to landing (which had a quarter mile walk after parking truck and trailer), launch boat, have trouble getting started but finally get everything going…Wife isn’t feeling good already so not a good start to the way out. (she is 14 wks pregnant so any wave hurts worse!) So, now 6 HRS LATER i’m heading out and decide i’m just going to start at end of rock jetties and hit the Charleston Nearshore. Finally find the spot I want to fish and anchor on it at about 12:45…Now wife has sea sickness and is vomitting but after that s

Well, at least you shouldn’t have trailer tire problems on the next trip. Be sure to grease those hubs! I have been trailering from Cola for years, and it sucks leaving at 2-3 am and getting home at 9-10pm. Way to make an effort. Congrats on not giving up. Your wife seems like a trooper.

Bring on the 2-3 chop!

Wife didn’t complain one BIT. She sd she was afraid too but I think she just loves me that much. I think I sd every bad word in the book x 100 today…all the way home. Even at 4:30, the 1 thing el wifey wanted from Mcdonalds, fruit and yogurt parfe, they couldn’t produce! The boat was a bad OMEN for me today. Next trip is on the 23rd with dad, brother in law, and family friend. Hope to have MUCH better luck and hitting the 100’ line to try and catch some reds, triggers, and grouper. (hope to max on some BSB’s too…and a few dolphin, kings, possibly a sail. Looks like we’re hitting the line from Charleston 60 and following towards the 140-150 degree line…Possibly the Y-73 but that’s so far with only it around not so much other markings

Best of luck on your next trip.
But let me tell you, you have a keeper in her.
We hope to fish that line next week in in the Miracles Tourney. I will let you know if we hook up with anything.

That was one heck of a story. Your fishing trips should only get better from now on. I took the wife to the Kiawah (4KI) reef yesterday. Not much to report. No spade fish, a few non keeper BSB, some Spanish Mackeral (all released), and some very smart cudas (that hang around under the boat). Good luck on your next trip.

John

the bsb’s at the nearshore were very large. I was using my Penn 320 on an andy heavy duty rod and had the drag locked down tight on it and the bsb’s were hitting so hard they were pulling 5 ft of drag before I could get them going back up the right direction. Fish finder was showing very large school like markings. Was this bait or possibly spade fish? I didn’t get to drop line but a few times so didn’t really get a chance to find out…

You should probly stick to the harbor until you develop GPS skills sufficient to navigate complex equipment such as pickup trucks to elusive things like huge stores.

the Garmin 330c was not very friendly this trip. The one walmart I located that wasn’t 10 miles off the exit was the 1 walmart that was no more… I think I’m better off on the ocean than on the road…I should sell the house and rent a slip and make the boat my new home. It’s completely wired for home living with a boat slip that provides electricity. pull the boat out of the water once per wk to flush and keep corrosion away and I should be O-K-…

No one could get you to a tire shop in ridgeville because there’s nothing in ridgeville but a quickee mart a napa and a post office…

My numbers are so secret even the fish don’t know where they are…
