Thanks everyone for all of your input. It is a lot to digest. I know that he will get a good education from any of those schools and that each one offers something different and unique. I would love for him to go to the Citadel, my Dad was a Naval Academy Grad and I know what a great education he got and how it impacted his life. I have heard good things about CoC and a 70% female student body certainly won’t turn him off. USC and Clemson (yes, even Clemson) have their own good points so it will come down to taking tours, talking to folks at each school and then sitting down to decide.
Henry I am sure my son would like to talk to you one day. He has thought about Med. school and radiology for a few years now but recently mentioned being a PA. I think the idea of making a good living but not coming out of school with a 6 figure debt appeals to him.
Bonzo, if he ends up in Charleston, I’ll take you up on your offer. He is my net boy when we shrimp together so he throws a pretty good net. Maybe with better tutelage he will get even better.
It is a daunting task sending your kid off to college. Hopefully we’ll do it right this time so we’ll be better prepared when our second one is ready. Thank all!

If your boy is into medicine/science but not thinking MD (I was in the exact same boat 10 yrs ago), check into pharmacy as well. Happy to discuss it if you think he might be interested.
And then he can learn how to make beer and bacon in his garage and sell fishing supplies like mhebbard !
Lots of different reasons to pursue PA/NP versus MD but long term financial benefit is a no- brainer. The radiologist may owe 100-250 if he goes to private med school, but he’ll end up ( current dollars) making 500-750 and up, and will have a handful of PA’s working for him making 85-125+ . Of course if he becomes a psychiatrist at the VA hospital, the numbers would be less compelling.
PA and NP schools are getting extremely competitive with admission rates of 8-10%.
If he wants to be a medical provider he just needs to EXCEL academically no matter where he goes. That GPA will count more than the name on the school- whether they like it or not.

Right about that. We precept a lot of PA students. The profession has always had a high application rate. When I started PA school in 1776:smiley:, 4800 applied to Bowman Gray and 48 got in. The ration is still about the same. The schools are looking for high academic achievers, but they are also looking for people who have done more than academics. The GPA is very important, but they also look at what extracurricular activities the student has had. Most schools require that a potential student have 1000hrs of some sort of medical experience. He can volunteer, work in student health services while in college, etc. Also, PA’s can make a lot more than $125k/yr.
There are specialist practitioners that make $200K+. However; the length of time to reach that is quite long. Pharmacy is another great profession. It is becoming as crowded as the PA classes.
We are all cheering him on.
