Why use soap? Seems like soap would possibly leave residue inside the reel parts. A light spray of fresh water will get off all of the salt. Penn spray every now and then and oil roller bearing or worm gear.

Once salt water drys a light freshwater wash down will not remove all the salt. You should use a soapy towel to wipe down the reel then rence off. Never dunk a reel under water unless it is a sealed reel.

I saw a tip on a fishing show one time about using cheap furniture polish to keep your reels in good shape. I usually rinse mine with fresh water while I’m cleaning the boat and then every so often spray my reels with the polish and wipe the excess off. It seems to be working well.

I wonder what furniture polish, WD-40, etc. do (if anything) to the line on your reel? I spray mine off with water and about every 3rd or 4th trip spray with Penn Rod/Reel Cleaner.

Now I am very confused on how I should clean my rods. I got home last night around midnight. I’m just fixing to go out clean the boat and spray off the reels with fresh water. The only thing special I’m going to do is put the cast net in a +/-25% water downy mix. I’ve got some old Zebco’s in the pond shed that are over 40 years old and never had a thing done to them other than fresh line and many small kids hands on them.
I certainly won’t use any astroglide on them… dang skinnej.
