I hear ya, Chicken.
However … the fact that any knucklehead with money can drive away towing a new boat with absolutely no training or driver’s license just in time to kill someone on Memorial Day makes the car analogy not as solid.
And we are required as boaters to assist another, unlike the automobile … unlike people just walking down the street.
This creates a unique sort of scenario where perhaps a little stupidity regulation can go a long way.
The original poster did say that permission to board the vessel was requested.
The CG is a branch of the armed services who serve and protect (our 4th amendment included)and are employed by our great country.
I do not think we should think of them as an idle unit that only activates when you “request their assistance”, like a waiter in a restaurant bringing over a plate of food.

I HOPE HE NEVER NEEDS THEM WITH THAT ATTITUDE WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU GO THROUGH A ROAD CHECK ON THE HIGHWAY ARE YOU GONNA TELL THEM THEY CANT DO THAT.PEOPLE
As a police officer I just look at it a bit differently, I guess. And, by the way, I am a constitution defending guy all the way…
To me, I look at it not as an invasion of my privacy/rights, but as a service. Yes, they can fine you if you don’t have the proper gear, etc., but maybe you shouldn’t be out there, possibly unequipped to save your life in federal waters. Then all of us pay to rescue your butt. They aren’t out there to hassle anybody and they sure as heck aren’t out there for the prepared souls. They are there to protect our country and recreational boaters from their own stupidity. I applaud them and welcome them on my vessel any time. If I have nothing to hide, why would I be offended. It takes more effort to be pissed off and offended then to just treat it like a service…a free service at that.
EXACTLY I HAVE BEEN CHECKED COMING HOME FROM THE BAHAMAS AND BLUEFIN FISHING OUT OF MOREHEAD CITY NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT GLAD THEY ARE THERE JUST IN CASE
You people live in la la land
I’m with BlueLine. I’ve got nothing to hide and I’ve never had my boat really “searched” except once by the FL fish and game folks. They checked every space, locker, cooler and anywhere you could possibly hide a fish, drugs or illegals. No big deal. Didn’t have any of those. People doing their jobs. I’d rather they were there than they weren’t, especially if you need them.

The bone I have to pick is not with the Coast Guard, but with DNR, and it has nothing to do with safety. I cannot accept the restrictions the Feds put on OUR fisheries with little or no knowledge of the condition of each fishery. But I am not surprised at the stupidity or the motives of the Feds . I am dismayed that OUR DNR would not only allow the forty or so artificial reefs we built to be taken over by NOAA, but would sell our DNR officers to the Feds. It’s about federal money being paid to DNR, pure and simple. I’ve fished and hunted for over sixty years , and I have never knowingly broken a game or fishing law, but I resent DNR being a party to this mess, and they are not welcome on my boat at sea, or on land. Further, I resent DNR allowing our officers to accept Law Enforcement Awards from NOAA.

It’s all about the $$. Despite what some of these knuckle heads believe, it’s not all warm fuzzy’s and recruiting poster BS.
NAACP? Would you explain that to me, or were you just trying to be cute?
Mark my words, son, we will pay a much more severe price one day. Little by little our freedom to hunt and fish will be whittled away. If you are not mature enough to see that, it will be your fault. I don’t care for you, but I do care for my grandchildren.
there is a conflict of interest with the SC DNR accepting tons of fed money to enforce laws that have no scientific logic. The DNR enforcement officers have one mission when they cast off. To make cases and bring home the cash. More laws mean more $$$$
I have no problem with an officer writing someone with a boatload of illegal fish, BUT somebody within their leadership needs to stand up and tell the SAFMC that they have gone too far. If the states DNR’s would object to our privileges being stripped away, This could go a long way to getting the council under control. As it stands today, The state wants as many fed $$$ as it can get.
THIS WHOLE THING STARTED OVER COASTGUARD SAFETY CHECK NOT ABOUT FISH RULES I STARTED FISHING HERE IN 1981 CHARTER AND COMMERCIAL AND I AM GLAD THEY ARE THERE IF I WOULD NEED THEM ALSO IM NOT YOUR SON…

Supporting them and their overall purpose doesn’t mean you have to agree with everything they do…
People will sit behind their computer and make negative comments about them for doing a very small percentage of their duties that are designed to keep them safe . I don’t get it. They’re welcome on my boat any day of the week because I have nothing to hide from them. They’re brave men and women who will lay down their lives for me (a complete stranger ) on a moments notice. I think just that fact alone commands the utmost respect. They are good folks committed to an honest job. Theyre not going to just go tearing through your boat on a search unless you’re giving them indicators of criminal activity. Be nice, be polite and odds are even if they do find a violation you’ll get a warning. I love seeing them out there because there’s a person on every one of those boats that just might save my life or yours one day.

Run into a bad apple sometime…then you might “get it.”
The fact they are welcome on your boat anytime should be a personal choice if your not breaking a law. I personally don’t like being stopped, questioned, searched, etc as I go about my normal law abiding day.
I may be called on to save your butt someday too. Does that mean I am welcome to pull you over and search through your boat anytime I want in order to verify you have your life vest and fire extinguisher? Or do I need to be wearing combat boots and gun belt to make you feel ok with that?
Marsh,
You’re absolutely right. It is a personal choice that USCG members are welcome aboard my boat anytime. The reason behind that is because I don’t violate any laws and I know they’re on my side. I’m curious to hear your story about your personal experience with "the bad apples ". Please share your story. It sounds like you’ve had more than a few run ins with them.

For some reason that I don’t completely understand, when on the water, we do not have the right (as we do on land) to deny a warrantless search. The constitution requires that “no warrant shall issue with out probable cause” and on more than one occasion I have told a police officer that I do not consent to searches. Try that on the water! No officer on I 26 can detain me to check my safety equipment against my will, without probable cause or a warrant.
I appreciate the CG as I do any other branch of the service. I served too. The CG will come rescue you if you are in danger . We pay taxes that pay their salaries. They do not help us just because their wonderful people. Their definition of danger is NOT an engine failure , or out of fuel. Don’t leave the dock without a tow service agreement .
