Cold water Sheepshead?

OK, I made that phone call, and Mr. Sellsfish is correct.

I called the SCDNR Law Enforcement division and asked the same questions, spoke to a very nice lady named Stephanie, and she assured me that it was perfectly legal to bust up oysters, barnacles, mussels and other piling crustaceans with a shovel and use them for chum and bait. As long as you don’t put any extra in a bucket and move the boat, and only have a reasonable amount for bait in the boat.

She said that it was a standard and accepted practice and even her husband does it. My curiosity is satisfied, so pass that shovel:smiley:

Down in Florida we have serious problem with the weight hanging up in the rocks, oysters, etc., quite a few of the serious sheepshead fisherman have went to a float with a split shot put on the line where you tie on the hook. Another thing they do is use sand fleas. In warm weather they catch the fleas, blanch them, then freeze them for winter time use. Best of luck catching them, I do not have the touch.

I will be staying at Folly Beach very soon and was wondering if there are Weakfish in the area now. When I was a kid living in Georgetown we caught them during cold weather.
