if this happens, someone needs to make a post and stick it to the top. I’d be willing to help out with my boat as well.

Some do. It’s a big business. You should see the operation at the Horry county landfill. They have an assembly line with a people at each station pulling material off a conveyor and placing in appropriate containers. There is pretty much a market for every thing we throw away.
If DNR goes for the Pot free week, I’ll drag my Skiff to Chuck town to help! Who knows might find a big Flounder in one.
If it happens maybe we could get enough crabs from them for a big Boil after the event.
I would help out.

I would be happy to help and will bring my son to pull pots.
Penny, why do female crabs bring less money? Boy I could fathom quite a few guesses but want to know for real.

They are a lot smaller. I think most crabbers grade their catches by size and the females aren’t going to make it to the more expensive sizes.

Up north the Jimmies are all that most restaurants and people want for steaming. Even large females aren’t used at most establishments. Maybe it’s tradition more than anything. Traditionally the males go to the restaurants and retail outlets, and the females go to the picker houses. Females are a bit harder to open, the shell points are sharper, and they have that big hairy flap. In these parts crabs aren’t opened and cleaned before steaming. Inside the male crab the fat is yellow and a lot of people call it “crab mustard” and eat it. I like it myself. Females have a coarser orange fat that just isn’t the same.
The meat in the females is just as good though.
Like I said it’s probably tradition more than anything. Up here folks will pay $35.00 for a dozen #1 steamed male crabs, whereas a lot of folks wouldn’t want steamed females at any price.
The females we caught yesterday were every bit as big as the males and they were all pretty healthy. I thought maybe it was that they complain more or something.

correct in all above. the restaurants want the big pretty male blue crabs…but i think the females “with their finger nails painted” (daddy always told me that as their claws are redon tips ) are just as pretty. #1 males now have to be 5 3/4 inches or bigger to get the number one price…#2s are 5 1/2 inches and #3s are 5inches…sometimes they buy “mixed”…where the crabber just makes sure they are all at least five inches and takes the price offered. I too like the female crabs to eat and think they are sometimes a lot fatter…ok…no jokes about women and weight here
and a lot of the BIG Blues right now are “WHITE”…real white bottoms and if you gently squeeze at the knuckle or outer corner you will feel a little “give”…these crabs are poor with little meat…and daddy throws them back.

ok…im lost about the plastic?
iron on the bottom
pots are wire(coated with a little light rubber type coating
rope
styrofoam floats
maybe im missing something:flushed:[:I]
another thing that happens is a lot of times the out of state crabbers who come here as well as some crabbers who move area to area leave pots that arent new…as well as peeler traps which I call “rust aways” as they are made of thin smaller wire and dont last long… should be a law where you can put a tag claim/mark on float on these pots and notify dnr…if the pots arent removed in “X” amount of days…you can claim them. Ive seen lots of abandoned pots from “outatowners” that daddy and other local crabbers sure could have used other than letting them rot and bury down. Daddy is losiing crabs right now…pots left open…I call it dump and jump…we hook his pots a certain way so can usually tell if theyve been emptied…so if you see anyone emptying pots that doesnt have a commercial marking on side of their boat…(big colored float with pot number and commercial sticker) yell at them…report them.!!! people think its ok to snag a few crabs…or take a pot for their own use…(we find pot ropes cut off where it was tied to the iron)…its not…thats someones livelihood. A crab pot costs about 60-65 dollars rigged out. thanks everyone…

Penny I’m sure you probably know this, but those white bottomed crabs with the softer shells have recently moved into a bigger body, that’s why they are so empty. They don’t eat when they are late stage peelers and when they are soft, so that doesn’t help, plus they have shed the old shell for a much bigger one. By the time that white shell gets some color and stuff growing on it those crabs will be fat and full.
Rule of thumb. A crab with a nasty brown bottom and a barnacle on his back is going to good eating. If he’s all cleaned up and pretty he might as well be let go.
Yeah. Knew that…daddy calls them “poor”… Ad we call the ones you speak of…nbarnicle or not…“rusties”. Or “dinner”. Lol. Crabs dropped to 40.00 bushel for number ones and 20.00 for umber twos today…big drop form 90 and 60. Then 55 mad 35.00. Now this. Daddy may pull his traps out for a while as. That doesn’t leave a lot of profit. 55 pots…today he had a bushel and half ones and 2 and a half twos…take out thirty five in bait and gas. …doesn’t leave much pay. ;(… And hate selling crabs for that when you know they are getting more up north.

Crab eating slows down up here after labor day, even though from now until November the crabs just get fatter and fatter. I ate em once this year down in Virginia. We bought them straight from the crabber for $100 a bushel. Crabs in the Chesapeake have been very scarce this year. Some of the locals are blaming the influx of redfish that seem to be getting bigger and more plentiful every year. I don’t see how that could be though.
Been wanting one of these for a while now.
Inside that crispy goodness is a big hard crab cooked raw with the lid off and cleaned of course. Squished down on the top of the crabs body is a Maryland style crab cake, then it’s dipped in batter and deep fried. I’ve had them where instead of a hard crab they use a big soft crab. That was awesome. I bet you could cook those up if you wanted to.
haha…been there done that…and have cleaned out the shell and stuffed with a shrimp and crab mixture…battered and fried or baked… also have taken soft shell crabs…cleaned and stuffed with diced shrimp, peppers and onilns…then battered and fried…

The ones I always seem to hit in Mud Bay have usually been there awhile, and are definitely no good after being mangled by a prop.I didn’t even know people put out pots in the winter. Really good idea though.
