I think downrigger’s are a waste of space on any boat other than S KA tournament king boat. I don’t like for a rod to only have one purpose,so my bent butt not only is used to run a bridal rig with a planer , I also use it as one of my heavy grouper rods. I run a Shimano TLD 50 on a P J’s wholesale Shorty bent but 80. These rods are bulletproof and cheap! Here’s the link

I have a 12/0 Penn with a freaking boat wenchfor a handle, could I use that reel on that bent butt, ???
You can use the 12/0, but a big planer is a ***** to trip w/o a lever drag. You can do it…it just isn’t fun.
As for backing plates…some things I take for granted (common sense being one of them). LoL
