could be a beat down thread, BUT here goes.

They are few and far between, but they DO happen. It only takes one time dying to ruin your day… I know people who have had some pretty close calls… Even if you don’t die, there is nothing fun about thinking you are going to die and I know at least 4 boats on this forum who have all had the thought that they weren’t going to make it. At least 2 of those boats do not fish anymore because they were so terrified. I don’t ever want to feel like that.

Skinnee, do tell. What happened on those 2 other boats? Caught in weather, and, if so, was it forecasted? I think that’s one mistake newcomers make—putting too much credence in the forecast. If a front moves just a little quicker that expected, things can go south in a hurry.

Weather. Exactly as you said. Was on the forecast, but came through earlier than expected.

That being said, I’ve been in my fair share of NE 15-20 where it was forecasted to be S 10. Those conditions do not frighten me, but they certainly annoy me, take the fun out of the day for me, and put me in a bad mood. But if I was in an 18’ boat, the pucker factor might have gone up a bit. Would I have died? Likely not. But, when I go fishing, I don’t want to be stressed out. I want to have fun… If I got the hell beat out of me every time I went offshore, my golf game would probably be a lot better due to less time offshore.

The point is that weather forecast can change on a dime even if it’s not forecasted.

I also know of another guy who had a full on collision with another boat in the wee morning hours. I don’t know all of the details, but it was one of those “the other guy is supposed to move out of the way” things from what I could tell. The guy still fishes, but got busted up pretty bad.

Works much better than a five gallon bucket(s)
Will keep you from getting rolled in the trough if you break down and slow your rate of drift.
Useful for drift fishing as well
