Crabbing

I’ve heard some things about Bulow Landing. Has the area gotten better with all the building going on over there. I remember some things in years past about torched cars being sunk in the water there and peoples cars getting broke into? Also tough at low tide to launch. How about a 17 ft Bass Boat?

A bad day fishin’ is better than a good day at work!

I am a commercial crabber. Blue crabs are swimmers and they tend to prefer the slower moving water. Set your pots on the inside of a bend in the creek. Menhaden is a preferred bait. Incoming tide… ( crabs are hungry) Out going (crabs just ate) but I find my numbers about the same.

Our tradition is that of the first man who sneaked away to the creek when the tribe did not really need fish.

watermon, you say Menhaden is the preferred bait, which makes sense. For me who is not a commercial crabber, just one who would put a trap out for the day, maybe overnight, would you suggust putting Menhaden in the bait partition instead of chicken. Also, I can see the Menhaden as bait going faster than the chicken, what about a combination of both?

You don’t have to have them out for days to catch crabs. We have dropped 2 pots just while bait shrimping or fishing in the past. Picked them up on way back in. Only set for 4-6 hrs and got 2 doz keepers. Fish will out catch all other bait.

You would be surprised how long a 8inch menhaden that is frozen to 20 below lasts. I use 3 per pot. I actually break one in half to get scent going. After 24 hours there is still some bait in the pots.

Wow, pretty surprised how long a frozen menhaden lasts. I will ditch the chicken and start saving the menhaden I catch when shrimpin. Hopefully I can get out there on Sunday, I want to collect some oysters in addition to do some fishing so I’ll put the pot in first thing then collect it when I’m done. Thanks for advice.

PS watermon, whats the crabbin like during the winter? Worth going out or do they move too slow?

  • Why would anyone want to live anywhere besides the Lowcountry in South Carolina?

When air temperatures drop below 50F , adult crabs leave shallow, inshore waters and seek deeper areas where they bury themselves till the average air temps rise again.

The building came to a halt. It looks like they put the foundation for a small neighborhood down with roads, water, fire hydrants, etc, but quit for some reason.

I remember that post about the torched cars and the robberies. It is little sketchy down there, but I guess that’s the nature of any remote boat landing. Lock up good! There is some nasty structure at the bottom of that landing that I used to hang my cast net on. I wouldn’t launch until at least 2 hours after low tide.

I catch crabs year-round its just a little slower and the big jimmies are scarce. But you can catch enough for a meal off any dock, in January just have to take some time. Its a great time right now thats for sure. I put 2 traps out on Friday night the 14th. Checked the traps Saturday at 9: am 13 crabs. Tossed them back in and went back at 2:30 and pulled them out with 17 all but 1 were keepers. We made gumbo and steamed the rest we eat some with the gumbo and picked the rest for crab cakes. I just love the mud bugs.

Yep, my wife loves to crab and I love to eat her crab rice. We have never used the “traps”, preferring to use a weighted line with a chicken neck/back and a dip net. Driving down from Columbia, we can’t always target a specific tide for crabbing so I can’t honestly say low is better than high or vice versa. We usually find a place to beach our boat, near the marsh where she can wade in ankle deep or so to net the crabs. Any of the inlets between Bull, Capers, Dewees, etc… seems to produce crabs. We used to catch quite a bit in the creek before Shem creek but it did not really produce much this year. Good luck and happy crabbin’.

Went yesterday with my five year old son striking and we pulled in 5 bushels out of 17 pots. 2 bushels number 1’ jimmies, 2 bushels 2’s and 2bushels of 2’s and 3’s . Boiled up a bushel and they were fat fat fat. Ate out fill then picked the meat for crab nachos and crab cakes.

Chris, I’ll PM it to you as soon as I get a chance.

Thanks D
