Yep, but I have only ever shot more than one, one time, when I got two with one shot, using a shotgun. That was 35 years ago.

“When in Md. the Fox Squirrel was protected”,
Bayrider7365, that’s not entirely true. The Eastern Fox Squirrel in MD is plentiful, and especially in the western counties, and is not protected. Hunting them is allowed. Only the Delmarva Fox Squirrel, a sub species of the Eastern is protected. It’s range is generally limited to the Delmarva Peninsula.
I’ve seen a few of them in my lifetime, and they can get huge.

I have only seen two around here that looked like those. One was an old mount, the other was at Donnelly WMA where you can’t hunt Fox Squirrels.

Where I used to hunt in MD, Fox squirrels were not something I saw. Mostly it was Gray Squirrels and the occasional Pine Squirrel. I had friends who deer hunted in the western part of MD and some in WVA, in the mountains, and they said they saw Fox squirrels often.
The Delmarva Fox Squirrel is unique, and can get to be as big as some cats. I remember my father bringing some home after hunting with friends who lived on MD’s Eastern Shore. There was noticeable size difference between them and Gray Squirrels. That was back in the 60’s. They were placed on the federal endangered species list in the late 60’s, and are still fairly rare.
Last one that I saw, I had taken my two younger son’s bass fishing in one of the tidal rivers on MD’s ES, and we watched a huge squirrel in the tree’s near the river. That was about 15 years ago. I carry a small pair of binocular’s when fishing, and am sure it was a Delmarva Fox Squirrel. It was at least 24 inches long in the body, and the tail was about 12" long. Most Gray Squirrels that I killed only got to be about half that size.
The Gray Squirrels I’ve seen here in SC so far, and there’s a good number of them in my yard & the woods behind my house, have been smaller compared to what I used to see in MD. Not sure why that is. I would have thought they might get bigger here with better weather, especially around where I live as doesn’t seem like too many folks hunt them.
Congratulations to you & your daughter! I used to Squirrel hunt with my dad often. He taught me a lot about hunting. We even had a tradition of hunting them every Thanksgiving Day morning and did so for about 15 years. Dad had a stroke when he was 50, and we st

Thanks for the info, I lived on the eastern shore & am only familiar with the Delmarva Fox Squirrel. After looking on the DNR site it looks like the Eastern Fox Squirrel’s habitat is in western Md. on the western shore. I have never seen one nor knew of them. Never hunted on western shore either. Plenty of ‘Chicken Neckers’ on that side LOL.
Just dropped off mine at the Taxidermist this morning. Told him how I wanted them both posed. I’ll find a nice piece of driftwood myself to put them on.
Thats goona be cool! Good job!

Took a friend after that big salt & pepper Squirrel yesterday morning. Walked in before daylight to catch it coming out of a nest, but spotted it around 9:30 coming from somewhere else.
Short stalk and two shots got him his first Fox Squirrel. 3#s and 28" long.
I have never seen one on my property

They prefer areas with long leaf pines. If you can’t find those, areas with large pine trees. Look for BIG nests in those pines, and evidence of Squirrels tearing apart/eating pine cones.
Look for them between 9am and 3pm too.
