Deep Holing for Shrimp

Since there is a deep hole thread, I’m gonna jump in. If you wanna put some bait way down there, here is what u need to mark it. 20 ft long poles. The guy holding the poles is 6’1"

no way in hell those poles will work in current, what y’all plan on setting them with? a piledriver

I think thats a bundle of 10 poles…

I still love baiting. The sunset on the water is worth the trip. Talking to other shrimpers in the river, solving world problems while heading shrimp in the river, the Chinese fire drill at the landing when a t-storm hits, the feel of a hundred shrimp in your net through the net rope, that “jelly roll” full of shrimp in the net, seeing the freezer fill up with shrimp, and many good memories make it all worthwhile.

BTW, I have trouble hitting the balls in 10 ft. of water. I’d never find the baitballs in 18ft. With the strong current we have in Beaufort, you would have to throw the net 1/2 mile above the pole!

I like to set my poles as shallow as I can get - or set them so I finish shallow.

The few times I have had success deepholing, there were a dozen boats all trying to get on the same spot. That’s not my idea of fun. Even if you learn to “find them”, you will soon attract “company”.

Thats why I posted above - deep hole on slack tide.

You’re right g8rnsc. With deepholing - no poles to worry about, and on slack tide the net goes straight down.

I was talking about the guy setting the 20 ft. poles. You would be working those deep poles beyond or before slack tide at least part of the time on a trip. With deep holing - no poles. Finding them in the deep holes by myself is a skill I need to develop.

I finally got a 1/2 way decent sounder - a Garmin 740S. I haven’t done the DH thing since getting it. Might try DH this year.

I would love for someone to post a photo of a fish finder screen showing shrimp in a deep hole.

I can’t find a good screenshot on Google images, but the few times I have been on them it was sorta like grass on the bottom or a small cloud on the bottom. In my boat, you can hear the snapping through the hull if you open the front locker (if it is calm). I guess I need to rig a hydrophone - that might be better than a DF for finding shrimp.
