Passed a guide in the creek this AM while I was looking for bait. Found only hand mullet and tiny shrimp. He said he caught a lot of good sized shrimp this AM near Drum island in 28’ of water. Anyone have some further guidance?
You’ll need a deep hole net, they are made different, designed to flare on the long drop.
Crank the gain up on that simrad and use the color adjustment to make the bottom easily readable.
Look for “fuzz” on the bottom, small spikes too but mainly fuzz. Gain all the way up to clutter then back down until the screen almost clears up.
Mark the fuzz when you find them with a waypoint.
Determin drift and set up ahead of the mark. As you drift over the mark watch the sounder, then sling and pray.
You’ll see the net drop if you are dialed in correctly.
@StumpNocker has some awesome pics of deep holing in reel* time, maybe he’ll post them up again.
Hope that helps
Very helpful, thanks @EF1! I’ve got a couple cast nets, neither of them deep hole. Guess I need that. Any size suggestion? 8’ bigger spread but heavier haul.
A long time ago guys would use duct tape and make a ring around the outside diameter of the net, then add weight to them so they’d sink faster.
That works, but not as good as a Betts or something better.
I’d recommend getting the biggest one you can throw, they are a bit heavier than a regular net so keep that in consideration.
They look like this,.,.,
The hardest part is spotting them on the scope, and sometimes you can get lucky and catch them without seeing them.
Like I said, I think @StumpNocker can give better tips, He knows stuff.
If you look in the search feature here there were some good posts Penny (Pennfishing) did a long time ago. She’s the one that got me trying.
I miss Penny.
Here is a good read too KC1, and mostly the deep hole thing is best in the fall.
Sometimes they’re there, no doubt… lots of current and can be tricky but also rewarding, found em from 9 to 49… I run a 7ft Fitec taped gs1000 and check there on occasion too, might see ya there
Thanks fellas. @EF1, I recognize that article, came across it some time before, maybe in the forum?. Good info on finding spots.
Following @StumpNocker ’s lead, bought a Fitec GS1000, 8’. Went searching near Drum island for some sign. Found them after I took my eyes off the echo sounder, looked up and saw some guides throwing. Set up away from them, same depth. Not in big bunches, could get 5 ish per throw.
I’ve spent at least 10% of my time on the water either “guide scouting” or checking out old men in old boats, ,., maybe more
Be a shame to waste those on grass carp, lol
Good on you @KC1
Well done!
