Dirty smelly bait tank water

Other than that the filtration is up to whatever bait tank you have … I have a Grayline so I have three stages of filtration including a Carbon bag for the ammonia … So we can keep Herring for days and Shad for weeks … although I have a tote tank in my garage for the long term stuff …

Rick,

See the above post. Your carbon is not doing anything for the ammonia!

I always leave the bait tank lid open, as ammonia will just about evaporate as fast as it is formed by non-seasoned bait in the bait tank.

Perhaps I should have been more specific … the Grayline’s come with carbon bags … I actually changed out the material in my bags with Fluval Carbon/Ammonia filter media most commonly used in tropical fish aquariums … not that it matters too much since lately the fishing has been such that 4dz herring do not last long in our tanks …

Plenty of people use well water from this area and I’ve never known of anyone having to do anything specifically to remove H2S. I did see something that said filtering through activated charcoal will remove low levels though.

Is there any reason to think your well water has a higher level of H2S than others in the area? Is there a noticeable “rotten egg” smell to it?

I wouldn’t not at least try it because a very slight possibility of loss of a few dozen baits. Plenty of people doing it.

I have noticed that “smell”, but only in the last couple of months and only out of one of my outside hoses that is over 150’ long … just figured it was bad water from being in the hose over time … I run the water for a couple of minutes and it’s all good … never had any issues with it otherwise …

I’ve never really thought much about it until this thread with concerns of hydrogen sulfite in the water started, but I’ve always noticed when adding Prime to my tank that it has a bit of sulfur odor to it. So, I looked on the bottle this morning and thought this was interesting:

I’m thinking Hydrogen Sulfide is different than Hydrogen Sulfite? I definitely don’t know much about either one though

Me either. Not sure if I ever passed a chemistry class in my life.

Long as it works!

Rick K retired as a chemical engineer:smiley: I’m sure he knows his stuff.
