The yankee thing is true. Sorry to bust anyone’s bubble. It is a fact that regional difference lie within all of us…
Now I didn’t want to start another civil war here. Though true…many a yankee might think a little different than us good ole southern boys, but can’t we all just get along.lol!

Hmmm, Southerners lump all Northerners into one group and Northerners do the same with all Southernerns. I’m a Navy brat and have lived enough in both places. Both have their good and bad people. I think it is more of national movement (not just people moving from one area to another) towards being more self centered and lacking basic courtesy and respect.

Yes, HB-agree with you entirely.
It’s a shame that has happened; but it has and continues to get worse with every passing year.

I am a yankee and agree that the yankee influence here is not a positive one. Just love hearing the horns because the lights been green for 2 whole seconds. But good and bad folks everywhere. I still hold the door open for everyone, male or female. I’ve pulled a ton of people out of snow with my F250 because it was the right tool. Never accepted money even when offered, ever. But still agree, the influence is unfortunatley apparent here. Good boaters are taught to keep an eye out for safety, so plenty of people purposely ignored your situation. But good karma goes around, so next time you spot the stranded boater, you will no doubt reap the rewards when you stop to lend a hand.
Many go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after.
I also would like to personally thank the southern readers for their hospitality. Most times I mention that I am new, people here are warm and friendly and offer a sincere welcome. Can’t recall hearing that too often in NJ and NY.

Like Cracker said, its not the law but it is the rule of a true waterman not to pass someone in distress. I may be wrong but after picking around in the rivers and marsh south of Charleston to Beaufort for 40+ yrs coming out of Toogoodoo I would bet this would not have happened down this way but I still have Tow Boat in the water and on the hill. I don’t know if its true but way back, when I was crabbing someone told me when you’re fixing to tow a boat in distress always let them tie the line to their boat to avoid being held responsible if things go wrong.
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
the harbor might not have a good fishing community, but the stono does. with fellas from james and johns island. me and my buddy were helped with a tow back yesterday morning after my buddys motor shut down on us. and then had help from an older black gentlemen get it running back in order. all depends on where you are.
Sternline’s statement couldn’t be wiser: “Try not to write in generalities or play the Yankee card too much; both are hackneyed stuff.” My life/family/friends have been split between the North and South, I’ve lived in major cities and rurally in each. Such statements (whether made in the North or South) are intellectually lazy -not harmful in themselves but only in that they dismiss or confuse the issue. The issue with Charleston isn’t Yankees, its outsiders in general. It’s an attractive place to live or vacation. I’ve simply never seen a city where a greater percentage of people at any given moment do not intend to permanently remain. We all behave differently when were not “home”. Working all year to vacation here or all your life to retire here may lead to behavior based on a sense of entitlement -not good for community but the reality. Again, an issue of “outsiders” not “Yankees” and only palpable due to the high proportion of outsiders. But look specifically at our waterways rather than Charleston at large and the proportion of “outsiders” expands further. Stonoman said he tows all the time because he can always fish tomorrow. He’s retired and lives on water. Most others are outsiders -I’m not just talking about vacationers renting a Key West with Bimini top and Hot Spot map from the marina or travelers on the ICW with someplace to go. A lot of boats on the water have been trailered in from Greenville or Spartanburg. Or maybe just Summerville, or off the lift at marina dry storage -it doesn’t matter. Someone has worked all week, made plans, invited guests, set aside money, etc. If you don’t think that results in every bit as much of a sense of “outsider” entitlement as a vacationer or retiree, you’re crazy. But is that morally bad, something you should be “disappointed” about? Like Cracker Larry said: you were not in any danger, there was no risk to life, you were just inconvenienced." How is your free time more important than that of someone else who worked and planned for theirs? I’ll admit that it’s prob
Hobohicket- well said, and couldnt agree more. I would hope that we could all expand our thought processes to allow for the important distinctions you’ve made. i too have lived all over and have met outstanding folks in all those places. Yankee=a**hole is a pretty short-sighted view of things…
Maybe I mis-read, but I think the original poster said he had the engine cowling off and pointed at the motor to passing boaters. Folks probably understood your boat was busted, but if you didn’t wave like a maniac to signal you needed help, they probably thought you had called a tow company and were just waiting on one to arrive.
If you had waved your arms over your head indicating you were in trouble, my guess is someone would have helped. Maybe not all boaters would have, but someone would have.

Just take the hand waving thing ( it’s fading for sure but still there) ride our country roads and wave (casual not stupidly) and see how many people involuntarily wave back. Go up North and do the same thing. Been there done that.
You can also tell the Northern influence in our young children. Growing up every kid said Yes Sir/Mam because it is respect. That too is fading.

Read my response to this thread - I was going to say that I was disappointed in you oh so nice all the time southern folk - but I didn’t. Why - because it was going to be a joke and didn’t fit the story. But since you bought up the yankee BS - and I mean complete and utter BS - a yankee needs to respond.
This yankee has been boating his entire life, 38 years - since the age of two. 36 years of it in NJ and MD - commerical, headboats, recreational, crabber… I’ve done all the above. Never once did I see a boat in trouble that didn’t get help ASAP.
I expected the same here - but I was wrong.
Then I started to pay attention a bit more. After boating the Chesapeake, OCMD, Sea Isle and the Delaware river my entire life - Charleston Harbor is one of, if not the worst places I’ve seen for bad boating/stupid crap.
-Aholes at the ramps acting like they own everything.
-Sportfish charter capt’s pushing people out of the way and yelling at everyone.
-Drunk idiots stopping in front of the battery to swim - in the middle of the channel. Saw

Stern - yes, thats what I am talking about.
This crap with blaming the yankees for all the woes of the area is 100% BS.
-My neighbor to the left with the beautiful house, well maintained yard, respected member of the community is a yankee.
-The neighbor across the street - renter, house and yard looks like crap, cars in various states of repairs, fights at 2am, no job, cops there every other week or so is 100% local.
-Neighbor around the corner, well kept house, hard working, on the neighborhood board… yankee.
-The people across the street, crap house, burnouts all hours of the day, cops there weekly, their kids breaking into neigborhood houses or destroying property, riding 4 wheelers around at all hours, fist fights on their front lawn - 100% local.
There are aholes from both parts of the country - I see no less in the “south”, no more in the “north”. But I don’t see the north blaming all their problems on others.
I once helped out some boaters & never asked for money or got offered any. I figured the video was the best payment. I pulled this bass boat with my 12’ jon boat 5hp.
