Hey guys! I know I am new to the forum but I thought you might get a kick out of this article that I found today. David Lamoureux battled a 400 lbs tuna that dragged him around for 15 miles and 4.5 hours. Has anyone here experienced anything similar?

Re inlet mouths: The big tide changes make a lot of current flow. It can be pretty dangerous if the wind is blowing at all opposite the current. So take note of the tides and winds. Might look/be fine going out but if you stay too long past a tide change it can be really hairy. Offshore breeze vs incoming tide, for example.

I just re-read The Old Man And The Sea recently. I wouldn’t want to be out there in a kayak and have a great white suddenly take an interest in me.
Ya’ll remember and Elgeebee can back me up on this one… If you anchor up it is VERY easy to turtle your kayak trying to get that anchor back up, strong currents and off the beach is a serious ride in a kayak and you seriously need to make sure you have your A-Game on and cinched up tight… Don’t want to read about dead kayakers…

I guess I just don’t really understand why you would lime to go in the ocean so much. Jetties is really the only place you can paddle too, and dangerous as hell. Unless you are paddling your baits out for sharks or king mack fishing then I don’t see a reason to go beyond the breakers. That being said, king mackeral fishing sucks close to shore recently. Everything like tarpon sharks big reds bluefish Spanish mackeral AMD whiting can be caught in the inlets. No need to do anything stupid. You can all the redfish and trout you want in the creeks so no life gjreating crap. It’s erve racking to be anchored up at the jetties in a large boat, I can’t fish the jetties because I’m to worried about my boat. Can’t imagine in a yak, all ot takes is your anchor line to be taunt and a big ship or sporty roll by and flip ya or if you cut your anchor you’ll be in the rocks in a heartbeat. Just put in at sol legare, paddle down and fish kiawah river and bass creek with shrimp for blues and whiting. Cut hhem.up and drift bass creek and the sandbars bu bird key, you’ll hook up on a shark or two. Nothing stupid and risky.

Fishing beyond the breakers can be fun and you can have a good time, you just need to make sure you know what to expect and have a plan B… It is more of a challenge for some people and they enjoy it, cool. More power to them. Some people say fishing the rivers and flats if boring and why would ya do that. Remember, whats good for you may not be good for another… and if you launch at sol legere that is just plain nuts to me… that’s the only place I ever launched where i felt safer in Baghdad…

When were you in Baghdad? I was there in 2009 and going to Afghanistan in 2010 but the day before my deployment, I got an opportunity to go to San Diego instead - much nicer and no IED’s. LOL
I am still wanting to fish in the ocean, and there seems to be little interest in it in a kayak online, so I’m seriously considering selling my yak and geting a small boat.
I was there in 2006 and then again in 2008 2009… Combat Camera
