would give the fish an extra chance to spit the hook…we always stay at trolling speed of at least 4 to 5kts while fighting said fish.
As fishengar mentioned you could use a heavy weight to get it under the prop wash but with that there are two downsides
its hard to see if there are fish behind it unless you are making a hard turn.
its that much more difficult to pull it in manually while at speed. Lot of weight.
Downside of the 90 degree dredge is you risk cracking the base plate because there is so much pressure on it but those are replaceable. With that option just run the smaller dredges with lighter trolling weights to minimize said pressure on the downrigger.
