march 15th was awesome day of dolphin tuna and wahoo last year- dolphin were showing up early in small schools but the big push is not gonna be til later on in april/may…like it is every year as skinnee said- you never know unless you go though so go and tell us!!
That’s how the water usually looks in late March or April…crazy. I’m thinking we will have a very cold Feb. but we shall see. I will say the “early season” (March) last year was much better than years past.

…but after looking back, looks like fishing slowed down in April. Fishing is very hit or miss until late April/May.

Wasn’t there a hard line of the stream pushed in pretty close to the ledge from 226 south last year for a good bit of March with a pretty significant temp break?

I have tagged fish for Don’s program off of OCMD since 2008 and have read these patterns. I just read them again and the way I read them is that they migrate to us from the straits of FL and from the Bahamas’. Correct me if I am wrong for what I am reading. With that it does say May and June are our primary months, but if there is war

With that it does say May and June are our primary months, but if there is warm water out there, there are fish to be had. If you are willing to make the 70 mile venture out there right now and look at the SST charts you can put a lot meat in your fish box. I know I am willing to try.

One thing is for sure, you don’t see that many 40+ dolphin days down this far South. You would think that South Florida is absolutely covered up with dolphins in April, but they are not. People get a full erection down here when they get 6 dolphin! It’s pretty sad.
Also, they seem to catch WAYYYY MORE blue marlin in the Carolinas than in the Florida straights… It’s not like they don’t feed from Miami to Ft Pierce… What does that suggest?
Anway, maybe you missed this:
quote:
"Tag recoveries from Florida and Georgia suggest that dolphin coming from the east side of the Bahamas Bank cross the Gulf Stream to its western side as they move northward along the U.S. coast""These fish are entering the Straits of Florida from the west by way of the Loop Current in the Gulf of Mexico and from the east traveling the Old Bahamas Channel. These fish move northward along the east coast of Florida where heavy fishing pressure on

If they are there, then why are the Sword boats not catching them? I have caught dolphin every month of the year, but April, May, June are when the mother load show up. Save your fuel unless you want to catch a swordfish!

Yeah it is. Back in the 80’s you would have 15 to 20+ days very often down off PB. Think there has been just too much constant pressure on the fish down there the past 20 years.
Shev,
Please delete comment don’t want the anti’s to have any fuel for their fire! We all know that the pelagics are the next on the hit list.
Well I knew fishing off SC would be different, but man do I have a lot to learn still.
Skinneej- Thank you for correcting me in what I read and have been believing for the past couple years. Don’t know how I misunderstood thtat one. I thought I had a 10th grade reading level guess it is really a 6th grade one!!! Just got the February new letter from Don Hammond. I will read this one better!!
Sellsfish- Good info I do not get sword boat reports only what I read on the internet, so I thought it must be true! If you have time at the oyster roast I would like to talk swordfishing with you though. I have never done it, but would like to get into it. Thanks.

Skinneej- Not defensive. I think it is one the one bad thing about email and forum posts things can get taken out of context very easily. I asked in the above post to correct me if I read it wrong which I do. You did just that and I was thanking you for it and making fun of myself at the same time! Like I said this will be my first full year fish SC and am in the learning process still. So as I said thanks for the in sight.

Anyway, check out this report for some humor… It’s entitled “DOLPHIN, DOLPHIN, and MORE DOLPHIN”
http://forums.floridasportsman.com/showthread.php?95414-DOLPHIN-DOLPHIN-AND-MORE-DOLPHIN
I wish I could find the one that said “CRUSHED THE TUNA” a few months back… There was a lot of gloating, crushing, cheersing, and some sushi eating… The picture was a guy with about 8-10 blackfins that all fit in the same 5 gallon bucket and grins from ear to ear…
Expectations are a bit warped on the meatfish down this far…
Cobia256, welcome to the site and put on your thick skin! some of the fisherman on this site are full of chit, some of them just sit at their keyboards @ 100am with nothing else to do! some of them know what they are talking about, some don’t! go back through their history on this site and you will find out who is jerking your chain and the ones that are jerking your chain and still know what they are talking about. all is good info and remember, it’s a slow time of year on the offshore sites!
real killers here! they don’t need to tell any stories!
If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.
