Fishing with my daddy....pictures added 03/17

Sophish…being in the boat is better than anything I can think of doing ;). …and yoga is NOT on my list of fun thing to do anyways;)
Daddy said there have been times they have built fires in buckets to keep warm out there oystering…and as far as ROO… ROO gets to sit wherever she wants to…and he will stop to let her out on abank to pee and has never asked me if I need to go…lol. She has pit stops …places she gets out. Out there and her ears perk up and she goes straight to him when she senses we are near them it’s so funny to hear him say…“Roo…you need papa to let you out to pee” hahahaha

Sea shaker…the oysters tonged are always delicous…not that the banks ones aren’t also…but the deep water ones are the bomb, Daddy doesn’t sell crab pots…just tries to keep enough to work. He lost a lot last year to theirs and cut offs…he runs them a long the bank…not in the Chanel…and some people just don’t see them I guess… Sme just don’t respect that thatIt’s someone’s livelihood…they steal the crabs…and sometimes the pots. One day last year we couldn’t find ten…and never did… That’s a easy 5-600 dollar loss… Just like pulling pot after pot to find them empty… I get very angry…cause I know how hard he works and how much of a setback this can be for him…

Palmerscott…those tongs can be a torture device ;). Daddy makes it look so dang easy…but then again he has those Popeye arms…here’s a 74 year old man who can pick twenty- thirty bushels of oysters still… It’s definately a “art” to doing it

I m going to help him dump pots over Friday! Can’t wait…I get o pull e ones he puts over thirsday while he drives! Love doing this…but which reminds me…I’ve got to go get a switch for the pot puller…he “mashes” two worse together to make it run as he says he is yet to find a switch that will last on it…it "bites " the crap out of me doing this…lol… He calls me a “sissy” when I do a jig…
I’m counting the hours till Friday!

That’s awesome Pen! I always love reading your posts and updates, and I also can’t figure out why people think it is okay to STEAL from someone else. If your dad ever does decide to sell some, let me know! I can’t think of much better than hand-crafted crab pots from a pro! Also, I do love the clusters, but singles are so amazing. I am going to have to buy some tongs and spend the next couple of years out hunting for them. I can’t wait to learn my way around the waterways. Thanks again for all of your posts!

You will be shocked at the cost of tongs…so hold on to your britches… …and make a video for us! :). If I can be of help when you get them let me know:)

Wow. Those oysters and crabs look awesome!

Also, are oysters like that common around here? All I can ever seem to buy are clusters. We will probably try to make our way out to the state grounds towards the end of this year and try to find some awesome looking singles like those.

Remembering back several decades… IIRC, South Carolina doesn’t have the kind of sub-tidal oyster populations that both Georgia and NC (and others) have due to the fact that we grow two other things too well. In our particular locale, we grow boring sponge and oyster drills very well. Both, eat shellfish like oysters. The boring sponge can’t tolerate drying out. So, it can’t survive in the inter-tidal zone. But, it does very well below the typical low tide level. And, the oyster drills, while mobile, also don’t get far above the low tide mark. So, any oysters that are below the low tide level have to deal with these two oyster eaters. There are a few places where you can find sub-tidal oysters in SC, but, they are not common and if/when they’re found, they can be wiped out pretty quickly. So, if you don’t have Pen’s family knowledge of where to look, you may spend a lot of time poking around looking for them. And, as Pen said, those tongs are longer and heavier than they look in the pics. You gotta’ have some shoulders to work those things.

Sub-tidal oyster are fatter because they get to eat all the time and are usually singles (at least, that’s what I’ve seen - Pen would know better).

Can sub tidal oysters not be cultivated. …?. Thats how they do it in the Gulf. It seems we have plenty of salty, deep bays.
