Flares inshore

What you really need to think about is personal safety. It might not be yours, but do you take your children, wife, friends, siblings, etc. out in the boat? Are they relying on your expertize? You are the captain, they figure that you know what to do. Would you take their safety at risk? Similarly, what if something happens to you? Can they do what is necessary to save you? Would that expired flare save them and you? What about your radio, or lack there of? Can you get in touch with authorities. Can your son or daughter give gps coordinates to the Coast Guard? What if they are the sole survivors?
If you always go out by yourself, no problem; but if anyone is relying on YOU, think about it.

So you mean I should take responsibility for my own safety and the safety of my family? Yeah, that's exactly what I am saying...
