If you are a big fan of the Sage Xi2 then you might be able to get a really good buy right now. The word is Sage is coming out with the Xi3 and I have seen the Xi2 at a discount lately.

Loomis CC. Do have a Orvis that throws a mean line, but is too brittle, or seems that way. Broken twice on heavy sinking lines and stripers on the Hill. Good luck.

Not to beat a dead horse but it all depends on personal preference and what feels best to you. I fish St. Croix Legend Ultra in 8 weight and 10. Awesome rods. For my 6 wt. I’ve got a TFO Axiom. Most people say that TFO’s are starter rods (and i agree) but I got this one even after 13 years of fly fishing experience. I think it’s the highest end rod they make ($275), and it is a freaking cannon and I absolutely love it. I can shoot a line across the harbor on that thing. I even recently bought a $110 White River Classic 3 weight. I tested out the St. Croix $275 version and liked the White River one muuuuccchhh better. I’m deadly accurate with it in tiny creeks. It all depends on what feels right to you.
In terms of the opinions on TFO’s, they are definitely heavier than most other rods and are made of less quality graphite, but they are still a great starter rod or it can be a fantastic addition to your arsenal, like my Axiom. They have a lifetime warranty, are quality built and my clients (almost all beginners) seem to learn very quickly on them.
One important thing to keep in mind is the action of the rod; slow, medium or fast. I’m guessing that most of the guys on this board are using fast action to punch line through the wind and toss big flies. However they are harder to learn to cast IMHO. Different actions work better in different situations. I would recommend the medium for learning but I’m sure you can figure out how to cast a fast action just as quick.
Get some lessons and practice practice practice. Or fish fish fish.
