yep, even at 7am the penetrating, inebriated stares from the smoky bar made me feel like the guy in wild west movies who walks in and the piano stops and everybody goes quiet… i think maybe they were just pissed that i wasn’t eye candy, but in any case my respectful nods were never reciprocated.

I always thought it was because I wasn’t born and raised on JI (although I’d been here a while). If you were getting the look too, then there’s nothing much I could do. I did wonder if ordering a bud heavy and firing up a Pall Mall at 7:45 would ingratiate me to the crowd.

that’s what all the old time tackle shops were like- I felt right at home there.

I’m loving this thread cuz when I first moved here 3 years ago that was the first place I went into to get some bait and advice on where to start. They were out of live bait all they had was frozen, and for advice I was given a tide booklet and was told to look in there for tips. They seemed more interested in the poker machines in the back pretty odd vibe, I left feeling like I was part of a saturday night live sketch.

Kinda miss north area tackle. Even though at times it was a little darker in there than it needed to be. Had a couple of nice people that worked in there sometimes.

West Ashley tackle shop was a little strange also.

I stopped going when all the other tackle shops opened up and started stocking all those wonderful matching fishing outfits. Then, when I asked if they were ever going to stock fishing balaclavas and they just ‘stared’ at me… I never went back. Those guys knew nothing about fishing.

Meet the lady that ran it on Sat an Sun. She also work at the tax office during the week. Work there just to make a few extra bucks.Told her when I retired to the island an hope to stop in
more for bait an advice. Could not have found anyone more helpful
than some of those guys there. A little strange but after you pass
muster great guys.

I have no problem with an old school tackle shop. I grew up frequenting many of of the good ones on Hatteras and later Murrells. That place was a little different, though. When I came in for bait, they seemed like they would rather **** on you than talk to you.
