Shiners are indeed great for this time of year, and some days outproduce herring and shad. You can’t beat them for durability. I once kept 5 dozen alive in my baitwell for 2 weeks without changing the water and no aeration. On a trip to Tennessee, we took some jumbos as a backup plan. When we pulled over for a fuel and a rest break and checked on them, the water was frozen and all the shiners appeared dead. However, as the ice in the well thawed, all but 6-8 bait out of 10 dozen perked back up. Unbelievable!
However, I must disagree with the guide who talked to Florida Boy. The only time herring or any other bait are too big for stripers occurs when the water temperature gets and stays in the low 40’s. Their metabolism slows down and you just as well fish medium shiners down to 1 inch crappie monnows. That’s rare for our lake. Just my .02 based on decades of experience.
Who knows? A coyote will attack a deer 3 times it’s size, while a full-grown elephant will eat a single peanut.
Totally forgot a buddy sent me this the other day. He had thought it was a gizzards. Actually a pretty large shiner. I catch them this big quite often while looking for gizzards. Have caught as many as 3dz in a net before in a crk on the lower end of murray!
