How? It would be nearly impossible to not hear and feel the boat hit the rocks as it moved in the waves. You would have plenty of time to pull off them. He must have run up on them when they were barely submerged.

If you look at the pic there is a large bad scuff mark on the bottom. Obviously hit at some amount of speed. Plus the reports said taking on water.
